FINAL FANTASY II

Cool game. I guess it fixes most of the issues people had with the original. The boosts are also very nice additions, especially for the final dungeon. So many battles that don't really pose any risk at that point. Warp is such a fun spell tho, so funny to make some actual bosses just disappear with it. Ultima is apparently fixed in this release, but it must take an ungodly amount of grinding to get to do decent damage. I decided to just use Flare as my main damage dealing spell instead (when I couldn't use Warp and when there wasn't an elemental weakness I could exploit).

i don't get the hate

So I was hesitant about playing this one because I had Origins back on the PS1 20+ years ago, and 2 felt like an absolute black box I bounced off of hard. But trying it as an adult with a fully developed brain, IMO this might be the best of the NES FF games? It's certainly the first that "feels" like Final Fantasy, insane Elder Scrolls style leveling system aside. IMO there's no shame in using a guide, esp early on and to map your build some, but I wouldn't balk just because this is the "weird" FF game. It absolutely is but still.

I'm a fan of the whole series and RPGs in general, so this is definitely in my wheelhouse when it comes to gaming. There are aspects of this that I thoroughly enjoy, and parts that just really fell flat. It's worth picking up to complete the collection of the series, but is very much at the bottom of the franchise for me. Pick up on sale, play on occasion since it only takes about 15-20 hours to finish, but wouldn't be the series title I would introduce to new fans. The good: 1.) The music. I could easily listen all day to the various themes from throughout the game. If you're familiar with the sound tracks from any of the other early games in the series, FFII is just as good. 2.) The fact that you don't level up but rather grow through "action" makes this one stand out compared to most of the other games in the series and does let for a lot of customization in creating how you want each character to be. 3.) There are several repeated aspects of FF that get introduced in this one. We get to see certain monsters for the first time, attack names, and unique items. Cons: 1.) Is Final Fantasy

Overhated as hell- though im glad the leveling system did not become the standard going forward, it was not too bothersome during my time playing. Characters talked more, there was a cid and a dragoon(10/10), and the music is still good! Still not a fan of trap room gimmick dungeon design, hoping this doesnt stick either, but i had fun!
