Bought and played this game soon after release. Haven't played it since. Thought maybe it would've been fixed since then but seems the game has been abandoned. Liked the art style and the unique world, but unfortunately as other reviews have stated, it has several game breaking bugs. The one I ran into froze the game entirely, stopping all progress after about 2 hours of play-through. I tried restarting the file, same bug. Uninstalled and reinstalled and played all the way from the beginning only for it to freeze again. Couldn't refund as I'd "played" too much at that point to qualify. I saw some other people had made complaints of the same bug (and many others) but the developer never responded. This review is very late, but to see the game hasn't changed after years, I don't feel others should spend money on something unplayable.

i am but yet another to encounter a game breaking glitch - there weren't enough save slots for me to have proper backups, on top of having to reload earlier a few times when things got glitchy, so just be aware of the risks when you spend the money!!! it's supposedly quite compelling and there's lots of love in it, so i might go back later? but how frustrating!

[i]Boreal Tenebrae[/i] is a wonderful little game which got little attention when it released. It's a shame not a lot of people appeared to have played it. It's like a more magical-realist take on a [i]Stranger Things[/i]-type story, (a group of kids riding bikes through summery suburban neighbourhoods, solving a mystery without assistance from adults). [i]Boreal Tenebrae[/i] tells the story of a group of friends in a small, dying town, afflicted with strange, otherworldly infection. The story also talks about topics like debt, uncertainty, apathy, and loss. With its cassette tape-like aesthetics, the game at times feels like you're watching a forgotten home movie of people you never met. The soundtrack is excellent, and I purchased it immediately after completing the game. The game is executed in the vein of a PS1 game, with low-quality, yet endearing graphics, and a heavy amount of puzzle-solving, via using/combining items in your inventory found throughout the game. You can also switch between all of the characters in different locations, making everyone's storylines across the game intersect. Awesome adventure with great artstyle, shame it's just the first act. Loved every second of it, though!

Amazing game! It's so bizarre in its narration, but also game design. The way you explore all those areas like a big narrative maze is so new and mind bending, but still accessible (thanks Dad!). Anyways, it's great! Reminded me of Kentucky Route Zero, both for the global weird ambiance and themes of the story (the post-industrial america). Good to see some political statement in a game!
