Charterstone: Digital Edition

It's a really great board game and since it's a legacy board game the digital version has the big advantage that you can play it over and over again from the beginning without having to buy a new game. BUT, after already 5 years there are still way too many bugs that make the playing experience not always so satisfying. In a live multiplayer game recently, with just 2 players, the game repeatedly got stuck for one of us and required a reload, but there was no indication from the game itself. It just said, that it's the other players turn, but for each one of us. Furthermore there are really no links to the rules and you have to dig thorugh them for every detail you want to know, while it could be so easy to just structure them easier and conect them with ingame elements. Furthermore there is nothing like a simple game log, which makes it hard and takes a lot of time to realize everything your opponents have done in their turns (if playing with AI or an asynchronous game). That's really not rocket sience, just some simple lines of text and maybe some ingame icons that are already there. The board game was a much better experience, but this is a good implementation and is allowing us to play through again (indefinitely) for less than the price of the reset pack.

This was a decent implementation of the game Charterstone. I was able to get through an entire campaign with 5 other people. There were some annoying bits like when someone unlocks a box only they see the contents for 15+ seconds while everyone else has to wait. There were fairly frequent disconnects but it was easy to rejoin. The aesthetics of the game were nice and charming in the style of the board game. I'd give this a thumbs up, despite a few technical hiccups and what are probably weird bits of code, however the game itself was very meh. There is so little interaction it felt like we were playing six-person solitaire a lot of the time. The game is way too "nice" for a competitive game. If I'm going to play a worker placement and there's no fighting involved, at least let us block eachother or have competition over the placement in some way otherwise it feels too much like a single player game. There were also lots of gotchas that I think were intended to shake things up but ended up not being very fun. I love the boardgame version, played the campaign 3x now. The digital version is fast, it's a bit hard to keep track of what the AI players do (I used 5).

I love legacy games and nice to not have to have a ton of people to enjoy one.

Played the board game and this is the same minus all the set up. Great application.
