Crying Suns

Anybody who is a big fan of the roguelite genre knows how tedious it can be to play a bad FTL-copycat with less than interesting combat and progression. This game chose to be a glorified Visual Novel that uses a bad FTL-copycat as the interlude between the lore dumps and discussions. Just from this premise, you know it will not be a good mix because the FTL gameplay requires to be able to play fast and restart fast, because you can die at any time from taking a bad route. Does the narrative aspect at least save the game? Well maybe it could have done it if it had been written and delivered by an adult author whose culture didn't solely reference videogames, cartoons and american television. The scifi is very banal, the characters caricatural, and the incessant attempts at adolescent humour will get on your nerves pretty fast. Most of the NPCs talk to you like teenagers talking to their dad. Every dialog is a long seance of click-through, it sometimes takes up to three clicks to just validate a dialog choice, the author also loves to intersperse his dialog panels with pointless transitions, sounds, and even fades-to-black between panels. Great game with interesting choices and rewarding meta progression. A great story to boot. Highly recommend if you are a fan of the genre.

Crying Suns – A Brilliant Pixel-Art Roguelite with Heart and Depth Crying Suns is a compelling sci-fi roguelite that masterfully combines strategic gameplay with an emotional, mystery-filled story. The game features tight, thoughtful real-time tactics with pause functionality, fleet management, and meaningful choices during each run. Everything feels fair and well-designed, making combat and exploration satisfying. Like many great roguelites, it requires multiple runs to finally reach the end. True mastery, however, only comes after many more attempts as you learn enemy patterns, unlock new captains, ships, and powerful synergies. What elevates the game is its engaging story. The narrative is surprisingly deep and emotional for the genre, filled with intrigue, loss, and big revelations. It pulls you forward run after run, wanting to uncover the truth behind the universe. FTL clone with a bunch of incoherent (misunderstood by the writer) sci-fi refences as the plot. Gameplay divided bettween fake RNG events, repeating dialog choices and some sort of poorly defined and explained rock paper scissors mini game ship battle. Might be worth getting on sale and playing for like 5 hours if you are lucky (not good) enough to get past the first check point. Rouge-likes should have remained in the 1980s unless someone actualy invents game play beyond weighted dice throw after weighted dice throw with the illusion of skill or player action having an impact. The game is a lot of fun, RTS with in depth story and excellent pixel art.
