I generally try not to speak negatively of a game for aesthetic reasons alone, but the combination of odd visuals and poor audio are some of the biggest issues in Evil Cogs. It felt as though so many aspects of the game were pushing me away that I didn't even finish what seems to be a relatively short game. Then on top of it all, the controls and control scheme made the gameplay needlessly frustrating.
Crappy Bird
The initial steps of the “tutorial” bit demonstrate that you have to use A and D to move. This creates a movement styled very similarly to Flappy Bird or perhaps the old Choplifter games. It's not particularly appealing and, while I understand that the challenge is to make that clunky moment system work for navigating tight spaces, it just ends up feeling like an endless battle with a lot of wasted effort. Evil Cogs does have a set of consumables for speeding up your movement and slowing down time, but it's most often used as a requirement for an otherwise impossible area of a level than as something you can use to soften the annoyance of the control system. Every moment that I actually got a little bit slowed down in this game, it seemed as though it…6 found this helpful
This game is bad. You have to flappy bird your way through the level which is the worst control scheme possible. It feels like a bad IOS port. The constant ingame currency bombardment doesn't help the look one bit. Additonally the voice over sounds like Text to speech. The German version has google translate levels of descriptions. I'm gonna refund this thing right away.4 found this helpful
If you'd like to watch the first 30 minutes of the game played without knowing anything about the game you can check my first look video here: https://youtu.be/5jGYcY9uG58 Evil Cogs is a fairly simple puzzle game in which you play as a little whisp character and you have to fly through the stages and collect small items along the way. Once you make it to the end of the stage, that's it. You move onto the next one. At it's core it's very reminiscent of games like Inside and Limbo with it's dark art style and scary themes. That's where the good stops regarding this game. It's issues are MAINLY with the controls. Everytime you want to move your whisp to the left or right it ALSO moves you up, even if you don't want to go up. It's almost like the flash helicopter game years ago where you just clicked or stopped clicking to fly up or down. It makes it really unfriendly to control and get through tight corridors and small movements. Along with that, the puzzles aren't exactly challenging or fun to complete. It's not like Limbo where some puzzles could take 5 or 10 minutes to sort out completely, Evil Cogs is just a quick "Oh I move from here to there" kind of game and each level i…3 found this helpful
I like the gameplay and love the graphics, but the contols will take some getting used to.2 found this helpful
Good graphics, ambience sounds and music. Nice for those who like this kind of hover movement games, and the price is killer low. Not my thing so after an agreeable sojourn, I'm leaving playing more for the future. Left or right mouse buttons = go up. A left, D right, A+D = down. Also the cursor facilitates the moves. With coins obtained you can buy Slow motion and Turbo motion (any quantity of them, and upgrade their level from 1 to 9 seconds maximum). For those using Cheat Engine, coins quantity is 4 (or 8) bytes Exact.
I like this game. Pros: Atmosphere, graphics, also music and sounds fits well into this dreamy world. I love those cogs, various wheels, light / darkness contrast, even catching light seeds - not quite easy at moments. Obstacles in game are well tuned - not trivial, nor too hard to stuck for longer time with any of them. Physics is great, too, perhaps credits goes to Unity for this one. Scene names are poetic as well - those girl names in particular. Level 2 "buddy in the module" is a nice refresher to the story. Cons: It takes some time to get used to the entire thing - controls, shop - it took like first hour of gameplay for me to understand some concepts (like up / down movements are actually speedup / slowdown, quests, shop items - what are those items good for, etc). But i quite like puzzles and uncertain things, so not a big deal.. Game freezes from time to time for couple of seconds - maybe my comp is slow ? And soon I will finish the game, and thats not good at all ;)
