I played this game on itch.io. I can't praise Hand of Horzasha enough. I've read more visual novels than I can count, and no game has been so rewarding. This was a joy to play. With a delightful and varied cast of characters that feel truly alive, realistic feeling relationship building mechanics, and a compelling mystery to solve, I was sucked in from start to finish. The writing is phenomenal, and made me both laugh out loud often and cry more than once because I was so moved. The design is intuitive and a pleasure to navigate, and rewards multiple playthroughs. The original soundtrack by M. Bulteau is masterfully lush, heightening every interaction whether tense or tender. The character designs are simple, yet expressive, and the dynamic backgrounds and lighting were a treat to see. I loved having access to a journal during my adventure, with the ability to learn more about this vibrant world. Frequently when I play a visual novel I enjoy it, but not enough to pursue every ending and dialogue tree. Hand of Horzasha is not a game, it's an e-book that's been dumped on Steam masquerading as a game. As a visual/interactive novel, this doesn't feature any notable gameplay, it's just a lot of clicking through badly written dialogue that would never have been accepted or published in print, which poses the question, "How did something this badly written end up on Steam?". When someone hoping to become an author is unable to get published in print, they spend $100 and dump their high school fan-fiction onto Steam, under the guise of a game. This high school anime club dropout fan-fiction is a badly written CYOA about staying in a village with non-humans etc etc... I guess the "author" watch too much Tenchi Muyo or something. The writing is very bad, and most certainly contains a lot of cringe. Visual novels/e-books are tedious at best... imagine the best novel you ever read, be that Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy or 2001: A Space Odyssey or Twilight (if you have terrible taste in literature), but then translate that to a format where the words dribble out and you have to click your mouse every time you wanted to read the next sentence, instead of just turning the pages.
