About In Darkness

Origin

In Darkness is a fantasy game inspired by mythological, and epic legendary stories; it also was inspired by classic games like Zelda II: The Adventure Of Link; and Ghost'n Goblins.

Story

Adventurous travellers in search of riches and treasures discovered a mysterious island with abundance of gems, but without knowledge it was a forbidden land, they were punished and doomed by the guardians of the island for seeing so much greed, no matter there were also innocents ones among them. However, the gems not only provide wealth, but also provide powers to those who own them. For that reason the favoured doomed travellers took advantage of the weakest ones, and divided themselves into clans. And so... more adventurers continue arriving on the mysterious island, but the struggle for absolute power keep them in a tireless quest to recruit more punished travellers and the searching for gems.

Travel to the mysterious island, find out where the power of the gems comes from, and become the champion supreme.

It pains me to have to downvote something I should have liked. A roguelike arpg with a unique protagonist? Sign me up! Unfortunately I ran into issues from minute one that had me uninstalling after only ten minutes of frustration. My issues started in the tutorial of all places (never a good sign) where I found the entire concept of separate interact and combat modes in this style of game to be really jarring. Not being able to pick up a key, open a door or read a note with my weapons drawn and needing to stop, put weapons away and then interact just felt horribly awkward, still I was willing to go with it. Shortly in to the tutorial I was given an alternate suit of armour to try a second class and was then asked to kill a wizard type enemy. The game equipped the new suit of armour and changed my class but didn't actually equip a replacement weapon on my character, so I couldn't fight the tutorial enemy. It's quite possible I had missed something, but this being the tutorial , I would have hoped it would be a little less obtuse. Deciding to start the main game sealed it's fate. I immediately encountered what I can only assume was a game breaking bug as I was un…

I assume this was never playtested, because the issues I encountered on the tutorial level were already game breaking for me. The game is incredibly clunky and unpolished, and basic quality of life features are missing. The combat is dreadful, and most of the time you can't even see the enemies because the walls block your view. The devs didn't realize that making walls transparent when they block your view of your avatar is essential. (This is something that almost every third person RPG does.) Why is combat and interact mode separate at all? Why do I restart the entire tutorial after dying to an enemy? Why is the camera so far away and so steep? When enemies in the tutorial can stun lock you to death with one hit, you know that's a good sign. The main issue is the awful combat system. This needs a lot more polish, because the setting and the visual design was the only thing I found mildly interesting in this game. Very disappointing, as I had high hopes for this.

I'm liking this game so far. I rarely do reviews but I thought I would on this game. I thinks it's quite unique and being a Ratling is different kind of character that personally like. Most evrything seems to be wrapped up pretty tight and the fact that it's early access means more on the way. Keep up the good work.

Camera feels very close to the ground and at a very steep angle, makes me feel like im staring at the dirt. Please add an option for camera distance at least. Also the first mission in the air ship is buggy as hell, keep getting stuck on nothing and dying. Other than that, pretty good game.
