I played this for ages on the Playstation. A surreal little gem. The music is stunning. The combat is iffy but the sheer atmosphere makes up for it.

5/10 - I had wanted to play this game ever since seeing it in some PSX magazine in 2000. And 20+ years later I couldn't pass on the opportunity with the remaster. However, the game left me pretty disappointed. It's... weird. Not much of a story, sidequests are incredibly dull, everything's missable if you just breathe in the wrong order, and the battle system leaves much to be desired. Graphics are gorgeous, but that's about it. I don't regret playing, though. It IS a classic; I just didn't feel it was for me personally. And after all is said and done I would still recommend it - only barely.

Legend of Mana allows players to reconstruct the geography of Fa'Diel through the ingenious Land Make system, a mechanic that ensures every journey feels profoundly personal. By placing mystical artefacts onto an empty map, one effectively writes the history and cultural fabric of the land during a singular, unrepeatable playthrough. Ornate pixel art and vibrant, painterly backgrounds create a cohesive visual feast that retains its captivating charm decades after the original launch. These detailed environments pair perfectly with a magnificent soundtrack, which remains a consistent highlight that provides an evocative, sweeping auditory backdrop to every strange and eccentric encounter. Combat scenarios frequently introduce friction due to imprecise hit detection that makes gauging the efficacy of strikes a persistent challenge. Relying on specific ability loadouts and mastering the rhythm of distinct move sets eventually mitigates these skirmishes, transforming initial frustration into a measured, albeit slightly clunky, demonstration of tactical skill. Navigating the fragmented narrative structure requires considerable patience, as the game prioritises character-driven …

I've loved Legend of Mana since the PS1 days, and this remaster nails the parts that made me fall for it: the hand painted backgrounds look gorgeous, the arranged soundtrack is lovely, and the dreamy vignette storytelling still feels like nothing else out there. Just go in knowing it's the same divisive game underneath, with clunky combat and a dozen systems the game refuses to explain, so keep a guide handy if you want to catch even half the quests. My real gripe is performance, since I hit noticeable input lag and frame drops in combat that a 20 year old game has no business having. Even with that, wandering Fa'Diel again feels like coming home, and I'd still tell anyone curious to grab it, ideally on sale until the stuttering gets patched.

Seeing a lot of reviews about it crashing, freezing, etc. I have only just started but, so far none of those issues just me revisiting an old favorite. Woot.

log in select a map to build, discover it, mess up but finish it, new game plus the game, retry, 10/10 would mess the story again
