LIVE A LIVE is a textbook definition of pure, unadulterated boredom—this game should honestly be medically certified as a cure for chronic insomnia. While the concept of jumping between short stories across different eras sounds promising on paper, the execution is an absolute disaster of stagnation and monotony. The pacing is dead on arrival, the dialogue is sterile and drags on forever, and the combat loop is so completely devoid of life, excitement, or impact that it can't even generate enough engagement to keep you awake. Instead of delivering a unique RPG experience, it feels like a bleak, tedious chore designed to force your eyes shut within the first hour. If you respect your time and want a game that actually stimulates your brain and keeps you hooked, stay as far away from this glorified sleeping pill as possible.1 found this helpful
I had fun with the game until the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ninja chapter. Truly destroyed me. Otherwise pretty good1 found this helpful
So inventive and gorgeous! The artstyle alone in this game would have me coming back even if the gameplay was garbage, but luckily it's absolutely not! I started playing on Switch when it first came out and had to pick it up here on Steam when it finally hit a good sale. This game is incredible and one I'll continue coming back to for years. All the different characters play so differently so if you get a bit stale on one gameplay style you can just switch to a different character without even leaving the game! Such a cool concept! It's like a multi game pack!
Love this game and it’s battle mechanics, I feel that people’s gripe with the game is that it isn’t one centralized story and when you just so happen to pick the weaker characters (in terms of story) you could easily have a more frustrating and disappointing time. I think it’s worth your time with a little bit of patience, not perfect by all means and I would love more games that look and play like this
Live A Live is peak
This literally has to be my favorite JRPG of all time. Like... I am so awed by the approach Square Enix took here. I love the stories from each timeline, as well as the part where they bring them all together for a grand finale. What saddens me is that this game was originally released only in Japan in 1994. Thank goodness they made a remaster to spread it worldwide. W Square Enix W Game W Everything about it
The 23 hours I spent playing LIVE A LIVE felt like some of the longest 23 hours of my life, and I mean that literally, because I feel like I should have 60 hours in this game by now. It took me two full months to get through this very short game, and it felt like a chore every time I sat down to play it. I don’t dislike the concept at all, and I actually think it’s quite cool getting to have the JRPG experience placed into a bunch of different settings and time periods. However, I found most chapters getting tedious after just 10-15 minutes of playing, and unfortunately the stories weren’t captivating enough to keep me engaged. Everything just takes so long, from animations to leveling to traversal, and it doesn’t help that the objectives are often confusing and unclear. The combat, while a little interesting, also ended up being quite annoying most of the time. Pretty much every enemy in the game, bosses included, either dies in 2 hits or can kill you in 2 hits, with very little in between, meaning almost every fight either feels too easy or too hard. There’s a pretty insane base range for the damage of your attacks, and trying to account for stat buffs and weaknesses/resistance…
