Moonfall (2020)

I rarely refund games, but after about 30 minutes of Moonfall, I felt compelled to catch up on my chores, go for a run or do anything that is even remotely exciting compared to playing it. The "gameplay" is extremely simple and consists of simply moving your character portraits around on a forward-moving board. Every turn you can only move one character to a different space, and then everyone moves one space forward onto whatever danger or benefit is on the space in front of them. The strategy and appeal of the game, I suppose, would come from strategically moving your characters to avoid incoming danger. As a roguelike, when all characters are dead, your journey is over, but all found recipes and upgrades stay for your next run. The problem is, then, that this game has nothing to offer. The artstyle is somewhat appealing and the world seems interesting, but there is nothing to do. There are a total of 8 or 9 item recipes, of which I found half after one run already. The 3 building types that you can upgrade over time only offer marginal benefits - the infirmary heals one more health point per upgrade for example. Short but interesting tactical game. Depending on the settlement you start, you begin the game with 4 companions and 3 to 4 professions ( 1 per member ). There are 6 professions that can heal, gather, protect, scout, craft or jump, 3 resources to gather and 6 items to create from that can help yo to negate the hazards you come across. Each companion can carry but 1 item to protect him/her from health loss (3/3). Target is to reach The Valley after crossing some X zones. Between each zone you can select which path to take through ruins (more resources), towards a settlement (recruiting) or towards a trading post. You then also setup your camp and expand it for healing your companions, crafting items & equip them or scouting ahead to where each path leads to. The game is turn based and only 1 member can move with each step you cross the hazardous terrain. So choose well how your companions tread the terrain and who risks the unavoidable hazard(s). Graphics are clear and simple, accompanied by some good but a bit sad music. 8 / 10. Recommended.

Moonfall is a really great indie game, with a simple yet very interesting mechanic. Each turn you can move only one of your companion. To win you will have to optimize their placement and anticipate every action. There are 6 different character types, allowing for variation in play style. During the night you are able to craft items, scoot the surroundings and heal yourself. The game might be tricky near the end but is never frustrating. My only complaint concern the achievements which doesn't seem to count toward the "Avg. Game Completion Rate". But that shouldn't discourage you to buy the game, especially at that cost.

A magnificent roguelite turn based adventure. Well done atmosphere to make your mind travel to this inhospid territory, interesting team management during travelling to the Valley that will need to keep all your sense to the max. Judging this game is not easy because it has been made by a single developper. Game Design The core gameplay is quite simple, yet fun to play. It kinda refers to The Windwalkers universe and I appreciate that, although the backstory of this game is shallow. Crafting is very important, so important that you should always have at least 2 Gatherers in your team to get the materials needed to craft equipments, and each equipment allow you to negate 1 hazard, quiet punishing. Pharmacy is as important, but Scouting isn't really, especially if you upgrade the scout tent. The gameplay loop repeats itself very quickly, but we can't except much from a 4€ game. I found that the several locations that you can discover don't add anything to the game except 1 op composition (1 protector, 2 gatherers, 1 healer). Also, you can expend your team during a run, and I found out that doing so (having more than 4 members) is always worst than sticking to 3-4 because they take more space in the grid and you can only move 1 member per turn. Moonfall is a delightful movement puzzle game with a nice resource management layer on top. The visual style is gorgeous, but it also presents all the information you need clearly. It's a relatively short game, but there are plenty of unlockables to keep things fresh on subsequent runs.
