Mythic Ocean

It's alright. Not a hearty recommendation, but not something that warrant a "negative" one. Basically you go around talking to various "gods" to choose which one is to create the world. Each one represents a different "mode" of life - consumption, partying, learning, cowering, and a secret one I shall not reveal. Each character is like an infant caricature of such a mode, and your role is to basically help them grow into something useful. The game is 90% going back and forth to speak to different characters and encourages them to be either selfish or altruistic. The writing often felt very naive, but its heart is generally in the right place. In between, you have some little fish to talk to in each area, which only add flavor. You also have some hidden book pages to collect, which add to backstory, context, and play a relevant but not mandatory role in the ending. The biggest problems I had with the game were: (1) as I said, how naive and trivial the writing often felt. The "good" choice is almost always obvious and not very enlightening; (2) it's a bit dull to just go back and forth to talk to characters - there aren't really any puzzles or quests or any thought involved. Set in a surreal, dreamlike ocean that exists between cycles of creation, the game places you in a quiet but influential role: guiding a group of young, evolving gods who will eventually shape the next universe. It’s a premise that immediately separates it from more conventional adventures, signaling that this experience is less about action and more about reflection, personality, and consequence. I'd tried to like the game but can't. sorry, I tried to unlock [spoiler]diplomacy ending [/spoiler] but always failed and had tried playing 8 times but always failed. I thought I would get linear plot when saw their campaign video reciting about ocean life instead I got to discover [spoiler]multiple endings [/spoiler]. As an achievement hunter hearthbroke me.

Got what I expected. This One was not deceived. Just wasn't very happy, at first, that my controller wasn't working for the game, but oh well... Very much recommended. Cannot say much so as to not make spoilers, but, replays are needed to get all possible ends, so that's something you should consider if you're someone who gets overwhelmed by that.

This game caught me off-guard with how wonderful and unique it was. Gameplay-wise it’s effectively a visual novel in a beautiful, traversable ocean, filled with many characters and sea creatures you can speak with. I found all of the gods surprisingly well-written, and their struggles had me glued to my screen, though it was hard to tell what I was meant to be encouraging in many of them before completing the game once, which actually meant I locked myself into a bad ending the first go around. Still, the endings weren’t really the special part for me, it was helping these characters grow and making choices to aid in that. Great experience.

Mythic Ocean is such a warm and delightful game about speaking to gods, advising them on how to treat one another and seeing the world that is created as a result. Naturally the game's main focus is on character writing and I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the core quartet. (Lutra genuinely made me emotional <3) Even minor characters are fun and flavoursome. I really enjoyed how the collectibles were handled. A sound cue helps you know when you're close to one and you learn a previous world's story. It's an interesting experience gathering a chapter at a time in a somewhat jumbled order. Though I can imagine searching for pages in the most open zone without a guide could be annoying. I also unfortunately didn't spot any accessibility options for deaf gamers. Collecting these pages give you more flexibility in nudging the balances of who becomes the next creator, and unlocks a new route. Earlier backstory reveals set up later ones very pleasingly. Sure, I can see the argument they were a bit too easy to see coming, but I'm not going to begrudge the game for not being Poirot. =P If I have to choose between Scooby-Doo and an asspull, I'll pick the former every time.
