Average side-scrolling shoot 'em up. Interesting story or at least an attempt at one. The weapons start up very wimpy looking and when they're powered-up (during play), they do look more impressive but the originality or variety isn't there. There's only forward, spread, backward, up-down and short range. In theory you should constantly switch weapons depending on the situation, that's cool, but in practice you'll end up mostly using the forward and spread shot. Has to be played in one sitting. Could not beat chapter 4 (out of 5) at easy. Power-Up is not bad but not good enough for a recommendation. (p.s. It was 1h50 played at time of review, not 8)9 found this helpful
Definitely good shoot'em up for its price. It offers some nice level design with interesting waves of enemies and formations that outstand laws of gravity. Plenty of boss fights with starships, mechs, aliens and other scum. What's most unique about this one is that it have a few different firing modes. Soundtrack is ok. Gameplay is good enough so rest easy because it's easy to recommend this one.
6 found this helpful
Power-Up, developed and published by Psychotic Psoftware, is a side-scrolling shoot-’em-up that leans heavily into the traditions of classic arcade design while attempting to inject a bit of modern flexibility through its upgrade systems. It presents a familiar setup—a lone pilot fighting against overwhelming alien forces—but its real focus is not on narrative or worldbuilding, but on delivering a mechanically driven experience built around reflexes, pattern recognition, and incremental mastery. From the moment the action begins, it becomes clear that the game is designed for players who appreciate the intensity and discipline of old-school shooters. The gameplay follows a straightforward structure: you move through horizontally scrolling stages filled with enemy formations, environmental hazards, and increasingly complex attack patterns. Success depends on your ability to read the screen quickly, anticipate threats, and position yourself with precision. Like many games in the genre, Power-Up rewards repetition and learning, gradually pushing players to refine their approach with each attempt. Early stages serve as a gentle introduction, but the difficulty ramps up quickly, requir…1 found this helpful
It's nothing groundbreaking but for $2.99 or $0.49 on sale, it's a perfectly competent little SHMUP. You have 5 different weapons, although you mostly only ever need to use the spread and back shots. Picking up a power-up will upgrade whichever weapon you currently have equip. You have a limited number of lives, if you run out you have to restart.1 found this helpful
⚡️ PowerUp – 2,800 Hours Later, and I’m Officially a Living Disaster 💥🎮 I thought I was just playing a game. Now, I’m convinced PowerUp is a dark force that slowly consumes your soul—and your calendar. I missed my own birthday because I was chasing a high score. My partner left a note on the fridge that said, “If PowerUp wins, so do I.” I responded with a blurry screenshot and a promise to quit… which lasted exactly 47 seconds. 🍕 My diet now consists mainly of cold pizza and whatever caffeine I can grab. Once, I spilled an entire coffee on my laptop trying to clutch a victory. Laptop died. Game saved. Me? Crying. 📞 Phone calls go unanswered. Friends? Ghosted. My dog? Stares at me like I’m a sad creature stuck in a loop of explosions and power-ups. 🌙 Nights blur into mornings as I whisper, “Just one more level,” while my eyes burn, my back aches, and my soul screams for mercy. I’ve developed an irrational fear of boss fights—and a compulsive need to collect every power-up like my life depends on it. 🪑 My chair creaks ominously, threatening to collapse under the weight of my addiction and regret. My reflection looks tired. My thumbs look like they’ve been through a war. …
