Primal Chronicles

"Primal Chronicles" is an attempt at making some browser/Flash tier "Trive management" "roguelike" where you assign some jobs to your tribe members by dragging cards around and, well, that's it. Despite the concept looking almost promising at delivering some kind of complexity to make up for the HTML tier visuals, it's somewhat shallow and linear in terms of the strategy you must follow every run... it's a yawnfest. The game features really lacklustre 2D visuals (does the developer not know 3D graphics became mainstream in the mid-1990s?). Gamers don't spend thousands of dollars on gaming rigs to pretend they're mobile phones or Commodore 64s. Not every "free" game really is. There's often MTX, or content locked behind DLC, or donations being requested, or any other number of things that could mislead gamers, but in this case I'm glad to say this really does appear to be a fully free game. Nothing demonstrates a developers belief in themselves and their work than giving it away without any remuneration. This is a service to themselves, and the gaming industry, and should be applauded. Not a finished game. Random item selection contains some that seem to have no effect, some that do, but are not explained, and some that you need to win. Nothing is explained beyond a tooltip telling you the recipe to make the item. Please complete the game before release.

Too much micromanagment with wonky UI - sometimes you can drag a card, sometimes not. Sometimes active pause under spacebar works, sometimes not (especially doesn't work after scrolling special assignments menu). There is no double click, unless there is double click that will unasign your tribes man cancelling the action. Ingame sound settings - you can lower them, for a few seconds, after that sounds come back louder, but sliders stay at low level. Fiddled around way too long to my liking

For a free indie game... yeah it's not the worst. But it's really just a waste of time. I really really want to enjoy a simple little strategy game like this. But it has zero depth and its actually just a good way to stress yourself out micro managing. It doesn't make it clear at all what the next migration area will bring, so you're never prepared for challenges. I just don't like it. You're always struggling for fire. I figured the upgrade to axes would help get firewood but you have to get the unlock to turn wood into more fire first. Like...if my tribesmen don't know how to make wood burn to make fire... how are they making fire? That's just kinda...silly. I've played worse games for half an hour.... but not many.

It is a game, that's for sure. It has potential, but it's a very basic gameplay loop of always explore and then shove every person you have into every slot. There isn't strategy, it's just mindlessly placing people into a box as fast as you can. For now, it's a negative review because it simply isn't fun.
