About RetroGunX VR

Before the modern games of today, games were simple, uncluttered with special effects, easy to play, difficult to master, and the goal for the most part was to simply survive. RetroGunX is just that!

Take a nostalgic trip down memory lane in this first person arcade shooter game in VIRTUAL REALITY. Blast your way though unique waves of enemies and mega bosses, each with their own strategy to defeat you, as you fight to destroy the ominous presence known only as RedSkull, and claim your spot on the High Score Board. The game has a very clean and minimalistic approach to the art style, which is reminiscent of those classic 8-bit games from the 70s.

In RetroGunX, you truly feel like hero inside the game, literally. You know that feeling you get when you're being watched? At any time, either during the main menu, high score screen or even during the game itself, look behind you to see a mysterious figure that not only watches your every move, but also controls your every move, though the arcade screen.

✦ AI summary

Players praise RetroGunX VR for delivering an excellent wave shooter experience with authentic retro aesthetics that genuinely stand out in the VR genre, featuring engaging level progression and weapon unlock systems. However, common complaints center on severe grinding for weapon upgrades, the removal of the original soundtrack due to copyright issues leaving audio feeling empty, compatibility issues with newer Oculus headsets, performance problems and crashes, and frustration that the game has languished in early access without meaningful updates for an extended period, leading many to recom
Updated Review 2/14/2019
I still stand by my original review. However, the fact that it's been in EA for this long without an update makes me have to knock it down a bit. It still is super fun & challenging, but the lack of updates and the grinding involved make me now say buy on deep, deep sale but then get an awesome game & deal. See my video review & gameplay here: https://youtu.be/UmxiFMFAlnA
Original Review Below
I can't believe this game got a 90% discount and is currently $1.19 USD on the Black Friday deal. It is so much fun. And it's actually one of the best wave shooters in VR currently. It stands out in a very crowded genre for VR. I know this may sound like heresy to some, but I enjoyed RetroGunX VR way more than I ever enjoyed Space Pirate Trainer (although maybe that's because I only started VR this past summer so I'm late to the VR world when SPT was THE game to play).
by the way, I do think SPT is a good game, just not as good as this one
So what makes RetroGunX VR so special? I'm glad you asked or at least read it out in your mind and didn't know you were asking. Well, let me tell you the answer. This game is spec…

I was planning to play this for a quick 5 min on my first (and last) run, but ended up playing 30 min and it won't be my last run. Two reasons to keep me going : - To check out the next level(s). - To unlock weapons and weapon upgrades (good luck maxing all upgrades), which will help me reach those next levels I want to see. More then a game, the developpers have designed a game engine that makes it easy to create more content (lack of content being VR's typical weakpoint), and when they say they're planning to add 40+ MORE levels to the current 22 levels (including more boss levels), as well as ~6 more weapons... I totally believe that they can. And by 40+ more levels, understand that each level is different : You don't go shooting the same wave twice. This is what retro VR games would have looked like if retro VR had existed : If you're into retro games, you might actually love this. As for the pricing : Once they've reached 60+ levels it will be like buying a few dozen wave shooters for ~20 cents each (less then a quarter), in a bundle worth buying, that you can chain without any downtime. And yes : I own Space Pirate Trainer. I'm tempted to say Space Pirate Trainer is the…

Well to start off this is a fun arcade game that brings back the feel of classic games perfectly... but unfortunitely thats all. Recently the soundtrack was removed to get rid of a copywrite claim on the soundtrack which has left the audio feeling pretty horrible. The final weapons are terrible making a pistol easier to use. After a recent update I can't even launch the game without it crashing. And while recording I got a low fps even though I can get 90+ while recording fallout 4 vr WITH vivid fallout all in one, 4k pipboy, and 4k graphics mods installed. So all in all it needs a soundtrack, optomizations, better and more weapons, and bug fixes. But eventually I do think that this could be a great game.

If you love Atari 2600 / Intellivision / Colecovision, you will love this game. Try it, and you'll see and hear for yourself. The sound effects and graphics are so totally evocative of that era. It's basically like playing those consoles, but in VR.

In terms of waveshooters this definitely is one. The weapon upgrades take WAY too long to get, so you're stuck with the pistols for awhile, which gets tiresome on the fingers. Even after you unlock other weapons it takes FOREVER to gain enough coins to upgrade them. This grindfest is so painfully boring because every time you go to the main menu you are forced for five seconds to watch "APPS BY BRATS" explode and then the title be spelled and a menu animation. In game this is marked as 0.1.4d (EARLY ACCESS) but it's not listed as early access in the steam store. Their website (http://www.retrogunx.com/home.html) states they want to release by Dec. 20, 2017, so I think the early access tag was taken off and this game was abandoned. This horrible business practice is just a scam to part a fool and his money.
