Riff XR

This game had so much potential. But lack of advertising (or at least, decent advertising) killed it. RiffXR relies on social interaction. Unfortunately, the worlds are completely dead. Which is a shame, because what this game offers is something I think most VR players have been searching for since Ready Player One hit cinemas.

I'll be honest when I played the game it was so dead there were parts of the tutorial quests I just could not do. The game feels like its in some kind of massive identity crisis and it cant decide what it actually wants to be. Game modes feel all over the place in terms of quality, and the hub world is way too big for the number of people actually playing adding to the ghost town feel.

When there's people online it's great. If no one's online, it kinda sucks. The lack of a tutorial also is not great, but back in 2025 this game did have a community that was somewhat active. If you wanted to know about something you could ask someone. Alas, no one really plays anymore. (I play on standalone btw)

Over reliance on AI based systems. It was entertaining at first, but it just gets repetitive. The pvp is rather lackluster with the firearms since their reload is slow and the "holographic sights" seen on the models don't even work. The avatar scaling does not match with player height, nor does the camera adjust to make the experience more comfortable.

The developers had good intentions. The game is beyond dead. I played for around 50 minutes on a holiday weekend's Sunday night and met exactly ZERO other players. A Social MMOVR platform is a shadow of its intended state with no active players, so all I have to go on is a single-player experience. The first thing I wanted to do is try talking to the AI NPCs but I couldn't seem to get it to work. It says push the A button but on a Vive Wand I don't exactly have one of those so I mashed every button, held every button, and tapped every button. No response. There are a couple of museums full of AI generated art. Inside one was a spray can! I decided to tag up a wall but by the time I stepped back to take a screenshot, the spray paint was being wiped away. I put in more effort tagging the wall than the AI generation. I used real calories from real burgers, yet the AI art persist and the ephemeral nature of human art fades like a fart in the wind. This sure is a timeline. I went to a couple more areas and they just seem like asset flips from Unity. I thought the game was Unreal Engine but you would absolutely have me fooled if you told me it was made in Unity.
