About Serious Sam Double D XXL

✦ AI summary

Serious Sam Double D XXL flattens the legendary shooter into 2D mayhem where you stack weapons on top of each other to unleash absolute carnage against Mental's grotesque hordes across 18 levels. This indie explosion lets you combine any guns you want—shotguns on laser cannons, chainsaws with flamethrowers—and fire them all at once in a symphony of pure destruction.

Serious Sam explodes into the second dimension using everything in his arsenal to battle the abominable legions of Mental’s horde. Pull the trigger to let the heavy ordinance fly in Serious Sam Double D XXL, a completely reloaded version of the indie sensation Serious Sam Double D with all-new missions, weapons, enemies, and challenges. Pile on the firepower with the revolutionary Gunstacker and fire all your weapons at once in a symphony of destruction! All that stands between victory and annihilation is a man in a T-shirt and jeans wielding a great big pile of guns.

Key Features

  • Serious Action: Unleash a storm of bullets and flame against an unrelenting horde of bizarre and ferocious creatures hell bent on bringing down the heroic Serious Sam. Clash against Mental’s army across 18 levels in three sensational worlds from the pyramids of ancient Egypt to the volcanic chaos of Pompeii to the harsh jungles of prehistoric Earth.
  • Revolutionary Gunstacker: Duel-wielding is for lesser men. Serious Sam Double D’s new Gunstacker allows Serious Sam to stack any combination of weapons one on top another and fire them all at once. Two shotguns on a laser gun and grenade launcher? Of course. Four chainsaws and a flamethrower? Yes, please.
  • Legions of Bizarre Beasts: Clash against classic Serious Sam enemies like Headless Kamikazes, Gnaar, and Biomechanoids or gun down all new monstrosities like the insane Chimputees, oddball Vuvuzelators, and the surprisingly sexy Femikazes. Prove your worth and take down four amazingly unique bosses in epic showdowns full of carnage!
  • Challenge Rooms and Serious Secrets: Keep the action coming with a battery of action-packed challenge rooms filled to the brim with waves of attacking beasts! Get really serious and try to uncover dozens and dozens of secrets hidden throughout this wild world!

I was not expecting to enjoy this game, but I somehow liked it more than the traditional Serious Sam games. You'd wonder how the Serious formula would translate into a 2D environment -it turns out, quite well! Enemies that spawn out of thin air don't blindside you like they do in the 3D games. You have full visibility on the screen, so no more cheeky nonsense. The hordes of enemies don't drag the pace down as unlike the 3D entries, here you can just keep on moving; rooms where you have to clear every last enemy are few and far between. Much appreciated change that keeps some semblance of good pacing which 3D Serious games completely lack. The weapon combining mechanic, Gunstacker I believe it is called, is goofy in the best possible way. There are many upgrades you can buy that change how the weapons function, although I did feel like the cash to do so can be pretty tight. The enemy designs are very silly, par for the course with this franchise. Having 3m tall women with bombs for boobs rushing you down and monkeys with jetpacks that throw bananas at you... you can tell the devs were having lots of fun. My criticisms for DDXXL would be: • The controls, with Jump especially se…

This is a lighthearted semi-review after one session. This is a sidescroller shooter and it is very fun to play. If it is on sale, go for it. You will probably like this game. RECOMMENDED!

I picked this up without expecting much, and it ended up being way more fun than I thought. The Gunstacker mechanic is awesome, the action never slows down, and blasting through hordes of enemies is just satisfying. Definitely an underrated Serious Sam game that deserves more love.

Serious Sam Double D XXL successfully proves that the legendary run-and-gun action of the Serious Sam franchise can thrive outside of its traditional first-person roots. Developed by Mommy's Best Games in partnership with Croteam and published by Devolver Digital, this expanded edition transforms the original Serious Sam Double D into a far more complete package by introducing new content, additional enemies, fresh weapons, improved mechanics, and extra missions. Rather than feeling like a simple spin-off, it confidently establishes its own identity while preserving the explosive energy, outrageous humor, and relentless pace that have defined the series for years. At its core, the game is an intense 2D action shooter where survival depends on constant movement, quick reflexes, and overwhelming firepower. Every stage throws enormous numbers of enemies at the player, creating battles that rarely slow down. The gameplay embraces old-school arcade design by encouraging aggressive combat instead of cautious tactics. Players are constantly dodging incoming attacks while unleashing streams of bullets, explosives, lasers, and other destructive weapons. The nonstop action creates an addict…

Light recommendation Overall: 5/10 (5 being average) Gets boring after an hour, but I enjoyed that hour. After getting halfway through the Jungle area, I decided to quit. The upgrades are gated by level progression, and it takes too long to assemble fun builds. The jokes are repeated after a while. (as in, worded differently, but have a similar punchline.)
