Stygian: Outer Gods

Not my final verdict since it is still in EA, but for now, here we go. Performance is terrible! And how can it be worse inside the mansion than outside? Inside of the mansion is almost unplayable for me. A flip book gives me more fps. Atmosphere, level design, story, all okay. Combat feels a little weird, but that is probably due to the horrible perfomance. Can't say if it is supposed to be like that - just slow, melee hits that don't connect, stuff like that. Imo a lot of "small" things need changes like why is there no indication if a key item can still be used or not. It does not have to disappear from inventory automatically, but knowing if I can still use it or not, would not hurt. Which brings me directly to my next point, player inventory could be either bigger by default or become extendable - backpack or something like that. It would be great if some items (especially ammo) could be crafted without a workbench. There are more of such minor things but I will stay fair and stop here since it is still in EA. If you want to, take your chance with the performance (according to other reviews, not everybody seems to have those performance problems) and go for it. Really not a bad…

Stygian: Outer Gods.... where to even start. I'm a big Lovecraftian horror fan, especially in RPGs, however Stygian: Outer Gods.... just isn't it. The only thing it has going for it, is the horror elements and the story to a certain degree. As many before have said, the performance is terrible. I originally tried playing this game a year ago on an older PC and was unable to get past the first area without my PC heating up to an unreasonable degree. Luckily I was recently fortunate enough to get a newer PC that can actually run this game. However, to my dismay the gameplay isn't much better. The combat isn't really satisfying. Better than some other Lovecraftian game's combat (looking at you The Sinking City). But I digress, it is a horror game after all, I didn't enter this game to fight all the beings beyond my comprehension with my trusty sledgehammer. What really made me write this negative review would be the entire lack of direction you tend to find yourself in. I'd say at least a quarter of my time in this game was spent running around aimlessly not knowing where to go or where a certain key item could be found. It has an excellent dark atmosphere, a strong Lovecraftian cosmic horror vibe, and a mysterious world full of secrets. I really enjoyed the exploration, puzzles, hidden stories, and the constant feeling that something disturbing could be waiting around every corner. The atmosphere, locations, and ideas are the strongest parts of the experience, making it truly immersive. If you enjoy horror, mystery, and dark storytelling, it is definitely worth trying.👍🏻

Stygian: Outer Gods is an exciting first-person shoot-n-loot based on the world of Lovecraft. Given that I have read some of Lovecraft's work, including some short stories and part of The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, I have a mild knowledge of the literary background. I found that this game keeps to mythos while retaining a spark of individual creativity. While the Crawling Chaos or Cthulu had not made an appearance, the setting of Kingsport was an accurate New England setting. The game promised action, horror, exciting skills, and item crafting...and it delivered! There were items all over the place that I scrounged for anywhere I could find them. Every piece of scrap metal, every rag, and any flora that I could take went to good use. Every reward and item discovered had significance and made me feel like I was working toward something useful. Unlike some games where loot becomes too common or useless to bother with, Stygian makes a thrill of finding the simplest items. This made discovering new areas an enjoyable endeavor. There were skills and feats to choose from that left me with the desire to continue to a second playthrough, and that makes the difference …
