About Subspace Reticulum

Subspace Reticulum is a work-in-progress, proof-of-concept research project that channels the chaotic 2D spaceship combat of Subspace Continuum into an offline, AI-driven experience. Born from a deep love for the classic multiplayer mayhem, this preview offers a bold glimpse into a much larger vision—an alternative Subspace universe powered by revolutionary AI. This project attempts to immortalize the feeling Continuum once provided, in a timeless experience, always available without the need for servers or an internet connection. Blast through a handcrafted map that pays homage to iconic Subspace base warfare, with every chokepoint, corridor, and open stretch built for heart-pounding dogfights. Enhanced with vibrant particle effects, this nostalgic yet modern battlefield sets the stage for intense, tactical deathmatches that test your reflexes and cunning. As a research project, Subspace Reticulum is an effort to push the boundaries of AI in gaming. Its Transformer based neural network drives NPCs that don’t just fight—they adapt, strategize, and behave with an almost human flair. These dynamic opponents create unpredictable, replayable encounters, making every match feel fresh and alive. This is just the beginning, a teaser of a grander experience yet to come. Whether you’re a Subspace veteran with a nostalgic craving, or a newcomer hungry for innovation, Subspace Reticulum invites you to dive into this early preview. Strap in, take the helm, and experience the future of AI-driven combat—a thrilling taste of a galaxy-spanning adventure still in the making! The current preview is just the start, and I’m hard at work expanding this proof-of-concept into a richer, more dynamic experience. Here’s a sneak peek at what’s on the horizon:• New Ship Types: Get ready to pilot a variety of ships, each with unique handling characteristics. From nimble speedsters to heavy-hitting tanks, these additions will deepen combat strategies and let you find your perfect ✓(Added in 1.0.7)  1v1 Duel Mode: Face off against a single, cunning AI opponent in a compact, high-stakes arena designed for intense, skill-driven showdowns. Perfect for honing your reflexes and outsmarting the transformer-powered AI.• 2v2 Team Battle Mode: Team up with an AI ally to take on an opposing duo in a dedicated medium-sized arena. This mode will introduce cooperative tactics and fast-paced team-based combat, pushing the AI’s strategic depth to new heights.• Expanded Maps: More handcrafted maps are in development for the core deathmatch mode, offering fresh layouts with varied chokepoints, open zones, and tactical opportunities to keep every battle exciting and unpredictable.• New UI and Menu: An overhaul to the visual experience of the game is in the works to accommodate the upcoming game modes and settings.Stay tuned as I continue to evolve Subspace Reticulum, building toward the ultimate AI-driven Subspace experience!Controls:Left / Right : Control RotationUp / Down : Control ThrustSpacebar : Shoot bulletsE : Fire BombF : Thrust BoostersEsc : Toggle MenuQ (From Menu) : Quit

Subspace Reticulum is one of those games where I immediately understood what it was trying to recreate, and I found the old school space combat surprisingly fun. It is a fast top down shooter inspired by the classic Subspace style of multiplayer chaos, but the interesting twist is that the opponents are controlled by AI. I liked the idea of having a space combat game that I can jump into offline without needing a populated server. The flying itself feels great once I get used to the controls. I can rotate my ship, control my thrust and fire weapons while constantly trying to keep my momentum under control. The movement has a nice sense of freedom because I am not simply pointing at enemies and shooting. I have to think about positioning, speed and where I am going to end up next, which makes even basic dogfights feel more involved. The weapons also give the combat more depth than I initially expected. Alongside regular bullets, I can use bombs, mines and other special equipment to catch enemies off guard. I enjoyed experimenting with different approaches because simply chasing an enemy around is not always the best option. The combat becomes much more satisfying when I start usin…

Not bad, its very early stages of development. Needs some resolutions settings and a much more soomed in camera, needs better sounds. those engine sounds are so bad. but the bots, the bots definately seem to get better as they play. whether they could do the same things with more features like mines, various bonuses and bouncy bullets, shrapnel, ect. well. who knows. I'd love to see them with a much more polished game. to the dev: Don't be afraid to think beyond subspace :D theres stuff we never had in that which would be so fun. :D keep at it.
