The Quest

Every now and then I get the urge to pick up an old school first-person grid RPG. A lot of them are what's ignominiously known as 'blobbers' - that is, a party of characters who all move as one first-person 'blob'. Think of something like Might & Magic or Wizardry. The Quest isn't a blobber, but it does feel resolutely old school. If anything, it's a little how I'd imagine an Elder Scrolls game if it was on a grid and made in 1993. It's not turn-based, so enemies will come at you and attack you in real time, but you move by stepping along distinct chunks of a grid. The gameplay is relatively open world - not a huge, sprawling landscape, but more of the Paradise Killer situation of being open within reasonably compact parameters. I don't remember all that much about the plot - the game is called The Quest; if there's nothing notable enough in the story to yield a title, it's not a huge surprise if it's not very memorable - but I was invested enough in what I was doing to see it all through to the end. If you miss that distinctive feeling of old RPGs where you would be handed a vague objective and then sent on your way, or if the idea of a more modest-sized Elder Scrolls: Arena…

The Quest is a charming, bite-sized dungeon crawler that’s perfect for quick, engaging RPG sessions. As a mobile port, it carries some expected quirks - simple combat and a UI clearly designed with touchscreens in mind - but once you settle in, there’s a lot to enjoy. The real highlight is its quest design, which often includes small twists and multiple ways to resolve situations, giving even short play sessions a sense of choice and variety. The story is engaging enough to keep things moving, and the overall experience feels like a compact, classic dungeon romp. It may take a few sacrificed characters to really understand which stats and builds work best, but that trial-and-error adds to the old school charm. It’s not trying to be massive or complex - it’s a focused, accessible RPG that fits perfectly into downtime. For the price, it’s an easy recommendation if you’re looking for a laid-back, turn-based adventure.

A badly made game. The quest log gives barely any details on the quests and if you lack enough persuade or lock pick many of them are impossible to complete. However the game never tells you this. The main quest involve having to travel the entire length of the map before you can start it, then is a serious of quests that are less difficult than traveling to these quests.

Used to play this on my ipod as a kid, and it was the closest to an open world rpg you could get on IOS at the time. So I have a LOT of nostalgia for this game. I think it stands up to time, it's a very charming game made by only a couple people and its suprisingly expansive. I remember many of the quests off by heart.
