Utawarerumono: ZAN

A decent musou game for Utawarerumono fans that have already played through the VN or watched the anime. The story is heavily cut which is a shame and I would only recommend playing through this one because ZAN 2 is actually an improvement to ZAN in terms of gameplay and one I would actually recommend playing through.

I had a fun little ride with Utawarerumono: Zan. Going into it the first time, I had set my expectations fairly low due to the rather consistent middling reception around this release. However, I went in and came out pleasantly surprised. Granted I do have very heavy biases for being such a dweeby Utawarerumono fan already, and I'm also a fan of Tamsoft's other hack and slash anime games. But from the high quality animations during combat, and the absolutely bonkers soundtrack (high energy electronic mixes of Uta's already amazing soundtrack is gauranteed to be a homerun) my 10 hours or so of gametime was a well spent one. However, no matter how much I want to recommend Zan to those who are unfamiliar with Utawarerumono, it's real hard to. I'd love nothing more then for more people to familiarize themselves with Aquaplus and this amazing series, especially with what is much more easier to pick up and play experience compared to very long VN's, but from both a story and content perspective, I can't honestly say people who aren't already fans would feel good throwing around $40 USD on this one. I believe this game is best played simultaneously with Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception since this game is essentially a summed up retelling of that game but with hack and slash gameplay like a dynasty warriors game. The models are cool to see in this style, the combat is fun but might not be for everyone. Attacks look great tho and the music is still good. Trust me, play this alongside Mask of Deception and just play the battles in this game up to the point in the visual novel where you unlock a new battle.

Should you play this as someone who hasnt played an Utawarerumono game? ♥♥♥♥ no. These games are an extremely truncated version of the "real games". You play Zan 1 and 2 after beating the previous 3 games. It took me 5 hours to beat this game, it took me 34 hours to beat Mask of Deception. Are Zan good games? Eh kinda, I believe they are Senran Kagura esc games so if you like those you can like this. Should you play these games if you loved the original games? If you want to give Aquaplus more money like you should, then yeah buy them and give them a go, honestly I wanted to play the Zan games because Zan 2 adds some sick ass post game content that goes beyond the story the third game ends at. And if you're reading this and havent experienced the first 3 games please do, Utawarerumono is one of the few truely beautiful stories I have ever experienced in my life. I dont want to understate it but it changes your life forever.
