Look, I love Utawarerumono. It became my unexpected favorite series back when I first discovered Mask of Truth and Mask of Deception back in...2017? Now, this game is pretty fun. The combat is a step up from Zan 1. It feels much more fluid. Alost TOO fluid because sometimes, I didn't feel like I was actually hitting anybody. The story pacing was fine. Just like in Zan 1, I went into this expecting a LOT of minor content to be glossed over or straight-up ignored and that much was true. A lot of minor storylines and subplots that happened in the visual novel weren't in this game. I expected this. By the end of it, I had a pretty good time with it. HOWEVER, I have\ some MAJOR negatives that severely impacted my opinion of the game overall, which is why I can't recommend this to anyone, especially new people who have never played the visual novel, Mask of Truth. It was okay? Good enough to bother finishing the main story? I don't like how much they failed to summarise the story of Mask of Truth, its like... they just completely skipped over really important parts? also its gotten really grindy. the good points are that its really pretty and I like how much you can customise units.

A definite improvement from the presequel ZAN game. The story is still heavily cut, but the side stories for each main chapter is definitely a good improvement that ZAN did not have. The main highlight to the story is of course the emotional ending scenes and the 3D models really does it justice and due to that very much worth the play. The gameplay itself is also much better than ZAN with many improved game mechanics. As a fan of the series I would recommend playing through ZAN, otherwise honestly ZAN 2 itself can be played without playing ZAN.

Well, after playing through the game, I will say it's a major improvement from the first ZAN game. There are a ton of things to keep you occupied and the story does a decent job at covering Mask of Truth with the side stories being the best of it. Gameplay wise, the controls are feel more fluid then the first game, even though it's still a bit rough around the edges. Skill/buff mechanics do feel a bit bloated and slow to upgrade, so unless you're a perfectionist, there isn't much an incitive to commit to a perfect build, making all the extra fluff feel like empty calories. My biggest gripe with the game is the fact you don't really have a way to get used to the characters as there's always some kind of timer rushing you to just get things done, or simply a lack of punchable enemies, so a training mode would have been perfect. Overall, it's a fun game for fans of the series who want a different experience, but if you're interested in the Utawarerumono series, just play the main games, and if you're looking for a musou game, know this feels more like a team arena fighter, which is not to say that's a bad thing, but it may not be what you're expecting. Why the friggedy fricc can nobody make one of these games anymore that feel good to play? Like, why do the dashes have a limit and are weirdly cut off after the third one? Don't care about how easy that would make it, it just has to be fun. This immediately feels mid because of it and I'm sure this one is not particularly hard either.
