Voices from the Sea

This game is super short, less than 30 minutes to complete. It was cute but not my taste.

Voices from the Sea approaches the visual novel format with a deliberately small scale, placing emotional connection and atmosphere ahead of elaborate mechanics. Developed and published by Zeiva Inc, the story centers on Cantus, a quiet and somewhat distant boy who frequently spends time near the ocean. His routine changes when he meets Maris, a cheerful and mysterious girl whose personality is almost the opposite of his own. From this uncomplicated encounter grows a warm story about friendship, loneliness, memories, and the unexpected influence another person can have on someone's outlook. Cantus works well as the viewpoint character because his reserved nature establishes the subdued mood of the opening. He is not particularly interested in connecting with others, and his tendency to withdraw makes the arrival of Maris immediately significant. She brings enthusiasm and curiosity into conversations that might otherwise remain gloomy. Their contrasting personalities create much of the humor, but the relationship gradually develops beyond playful exchanges. Voices from the Sea is a short visual novel that I think works best when I treat it as a small relaxing story rather than a game with lots of things to do. I follow Cantus, a young boy who meets Maris, a mysterious girl by the sea, and their meeting slowly turns into something much more personal and supernatural. The story has a simple slice of life feeling at first, but there is a quiet mystery underneath it that gives me a reason to keep reading. It is a very gentle experience and does not try to overwhelm me with complicated choices or gameplay systems. The atmosphere is probably what I like most. The seaside setting gives the whole thing a calm feeling, and the animated backgrounds make the scenes feel a little more alive than a completely static visual novel. I also like the contrast between the cute character designs and the more emotional parts of the story. There is some comedy mixed into the supernatural elements, so it does not stay completely serious from beginning to end. A very short but very sweet game with cute art and a heartfelt storyline. It's quick to finish, but enjoyable while it lasts, and funny! I highly recommend if you like short visual novels :)
