Where the Water Tastes Like Wine is a narrative adventure where you travel Depression-era America collecting stories from unforgettable characters, then retell those stories as currency to unlock deeper truths about their lives. Its haunting hand-drawn art, voice acting from acclaimed talent like Sting and Dave Fennoy, and the organic way stories transform as they're shared across the country create an unforgettable exploration of American folklore and human connection.
Where the Water Tastes Like Wine is a Narrative-Adventure game about traveling, sharing stories, and surviving manifest destiny. Featuring gorgeous hand-drawn illustrations, Where the Water Tastes Like Wine combines 2D visuals with a 3D overworld US map.
Players wander across a folkloric Depression era United States at their own pace, meeting strangers with their own stories to tell. Through these interactions, players will be able to collect unique stories which can then be re-told to unlock new interactions. In this way the in-game stories themselves act as a currency to progress through the game, and it’s up to the player to pair the right story with the unique needs of each of the characters that you will encounter throughout your travels. Only through these right pairings will characters reveal their true selves, and bestow you with the most powerful stories, the true ones which reveal something about their own lives. In Where The Water Tastes Like Wine, stories organically take on a life of their own as they grow larger and transform as they're told- and re-told.

The place over the hill where they say the water tastes just like the sweetest wine?": Travel the Depression-Era United States, laboring to pay off a debt by learning the true stories of 16 signature characters across a wide range of American experience from migrant workers to a travelling preacher to a Navajo woman forcibly relocated on the Long Walk.
- "This whole land's built on stories; it's one big story, America is": As you explore, you'll encounter strange and unsettling things: slices of a country built on dust clouds and murky dreams, where the folk tales are bleeding through. You'll carry those tales with you, swapping them round campfires to make the cast of characters open up to you and share their own stories.
- "The greatest stories are the true ones; the ones people will tell you about their own lives": The stories you share will return to you along your journey, changed in the telling as they've made their way around the country. As you meet the characters time and again on your travels, they will grow to trust you and, hopefully, share their true selves with you. Only by learning all their real stories can you pay off your debt.

Where the Water Tastes Like Wine excels with its atmospheric writing, art direction, and haunting Depression-era setting that creates a genuinely poetic experience. However, the game is significantly hampered by tedious gameplay mechanics—painfully slow walking, frustrating fast travel systems, and repetitive collection loops—that turn the journey into a chore, compounded by unfixed bugs and poor quality-of-life features.
Walking across Depression-era America trading folk stories feels like an absolute poetic masterpiece for the first few hours. Unfortunately, the repetitive gameplay loop turns what should be an epic journey into a bit of a cross-country chore. Still, the atmospheric soundtrack and haunting writing make it worth a stroll if you're in a melancholy mood.13 found this helpful
ot exactly state-of-the-art graphics compared to today's games, but this game truly excels where it matters. There are many aspects of this game that can be described as tedious or subpar, but the artistic and narrative effort put into this makes it easy to look past the negatives. It all boils down to preference in this game's case. For gamers who enjoy challenging games highly focused on gameplay and action mechanics, unfortunately, this game won't hit the mark as much as others will. However, if you're in search of story-rich adventure and appreciate some good voice acting, art, (HEAVY on the art for this one, absolutely incredible and immersive for its theme) and overall creativity, I hope you'll love this game as much as I did. There's not much dialogue between decisions, making for some captivatIng and rapid-fire storytelling. I found myself utterly enamoured by some of the stories— you'll have to pay attention, however, for you'll need to be familiar with all the stories you collect over time to properly be able to use them. And for someone who loves folk and country music as much as myself, I really did not find the need to put on my own while playing, for this game's…1 found this helpful
It does taste like wine
boring
The game is great! I love the enviroment, the aesthetics, the general idea (walking around collecting stories) . The setting is fantastic (USA, Depression era) and it's quite original. I even love that you can't get one of the achievements for narrative purposes. It's great... BUT... The game has several bugs that were never fixed. For a $20 dollar game from 2018... C'mon. C'mon buddies... You can't have a game with flagrant bugs (Stucked at 234 stories out of 237 because of a bug I can't fix even after trying all the solutions other players came across). This speaks to me of dev abandonment honestly. This are things they could easily fix with a patch or something in maybe 2 days of work that they never sat down to do in the last 8 years...
