The game that almost died due to Nintendo, The Great Giana Sisters, has returned in Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams. Back in the 80s, The Great Giana Sisters came out on the Commodore 64 and became infamous for looking a little too similar to Super Mario Bros. on the Nintendo Entertainment System. The resemblance was so obvious that the game was quickly pulled from store shelves, turning it into a strange piece of gaming history. For years, the series faded into obscurity… UNTIL NOW… or, well, at least back in 2012. Right from the start, Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams shows that it isn’t just trying to copy the classics anymore. Instead, it builds its entire identity around a clever mechanic: switching between two versions of Giana (let’s call them Cute Giana and Punk Giana). Cute Giana floats gracefully through the air, while Punk Giana dashes aggressively through enemies and obstacles. Switching between these forms is the core mechanic of the game, and you’ll need to get used to it quickly. Character design-wise… it’s pretty bland. I bought Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams thinking it would be a nice, colorful platformer to introduce my son and nephews to PC gaming. Cute visuals, cartoon style… seemed like a safe bet. Yeah, no. This game is secretly a hardcore platformer wearing a friendly disguise. Even on normal difficulty, it demands sharp reflexes, precise movement, and quick decision-making. It’s not “kid-friendly platforming”; it’s “why did I miss that jump by one pixel again?” platforming. And the boss fights… let’s just say I had a long, personal relationship with that octopus. Over 100 attempts later, I finally moved on with my dignity slightly damaged. The controls also don’t help. The key binding system is awkward and really feels like the game was designed with controllers in mind first. At one point, I genuinely thought the underwater sections were broken because, with the default keyboard settings, I couldn’t switch characters underwater. Turns out you actually need to rebind keys for the mechanic to work properly. Not exactly intuitive design. And in the end, I never actually finished the game. Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams is one of those platformers that hooks you immediately with its gorgeous visuals and the seamless world-switching mechanic — pressing a button to morph the entire level and soundtrack between Giana's two personalities is genuinely impressive and never gets old to watch. The dual soundtrack, blending classical and heavy metal arrangements that swap in real time, is worth the price of admission alone. That said, the game's biggest weakness is variety: after a few hours, the levels start to blur together since you're largely dodging the same enemies and traps with only slight rearrangements, and the stages drag on longer than they should. The dash ability can also be maddeningly inconsistent, sending you careening into enemies at the worst moments. I remember playing the PS3 demo of this as a kid. I think I enjoyed it more then. Not a bad game tho, just wasn't quite vibing with it as much as I wanted to so I ended up refunding it. I guess maybe it would've felt a little better with a controller but I dunno.
this game is ONE SINGLE CRASH all in one. i never played a game crashing more often. offers direct x settings that it doesnt even support. than i play on DIRECTX9 & 60FPS and a screen settings that make my eyes bleed and i come to the intro sequence and it crashes again. this game is a technical disaster! UNPLAYABLE!
It's kind of like Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver only it's a whimsical Alice In Wonderland inspired 2.5D platformer. It has a nice atmosphere & decent aesthetics.
