About Port Royale 4

✦ AI summary

Port Royale 4 puts you in command of a Caribbean colony in the 17th century, tasking you with building trade routes, managing production chains across islands, and expanding your settlement into a thriving commercial hub. The game stands out with its intricate economic simulation, turn-based naval combat supporting up to 8 ships with tactical maneuvering, and the freedom to pursue diplomacy, conquest, or piracy across a detailed sea map.

Set sail and join the colonial powers of Spain, England, France and the Netherlands in their fight for supremacy of the Caribbean in the 17th century.
In ‘Port Royale 4’ you will take control of a colony as a young and ambitious governor who is eager to learn what it takes to manage and grow his small settlement into a bustling trader city.

Develop production chains connecting multiple islands and create complex trade routes across the Caribbean, covering the ever-growing needs of the respective cities. Make use of the detailed sea map to avoid stormy weather regions, cliffs or shallow waters. Fulfill tasks for your nation’s viceroy, earning more fame to unlock town buildings, ships and more. Conquer the cities of rival nations or hunt down their fleets with a letter of marque while also keeping a keen eye out for pirates and other privateers.

For the first time in the series, naval battles will be turn-based, with up to 8 ships battling at one time and tactical captain maneuvers that can turn the tide in even the most hopeless of situations for a glorious victory.

✦ AI summary

Port Royale 4 is a controversial entry in the series that abandons many mechanics from previous games, particularly in its battle and trade systems, which players found either frustratingly convoluted or needlessly changed from what worked before. While some appreciate the improved visuals and smoother gameplay once the steep learning curve is overcome, many feel the game tries to pack too much complexity into systems that should be straightforward, with lengthy tutorials and numerous restrictive mechanics making it feel more tedious than relaxing.

If you're looking for a relaxing trade game, keep looking. My first clue should have been all the tutorials and that they bribe you to suffer through them. By the time I was ready to play, I couldn't remember half of what they showed me. The mechanics of this game are unnecessarily convoluted and it tries to pack in too much content. I got so frustrated by the tutorials that I gave up. I just wanted to trade stuff and make money. I don't need the fate of entire towns resting on me, or viceroys getting pissy just because I don't obey their every wish or can't do this or that because I don't have the proper licenses.
Decent trading Sim that quickly sails into monotony
Port royale 4 gets off to a promising start. The world map looks great, setting up your first few trade routes is satisfying, and watching your merchant fleet grow gives a nice initial hook. However, once the honeymoon period wears off, the game struggles to hold your attention. The biggest issue is its severe lack of longevity. The core loop becomes incredibly repetitive very quickly and once you automate your trade routes, the game largely plays itself, leaving you with little to do other than sit back and watch your money increase. The game quickly devolves into an idle manager, and the tasks and campaign missions do not help either, as they mostly boil down to boring monotonous "deliver XX amount of goods" objectives without any real narrative flavor or weight. The turn based tactical battles looked good but after you do a few you find they lack real tactical depth and suffer from the same repetitiveness as the economic side of the game. Once you figure out the basic movement and attack patterns, fighting rarely offers a meaningful challenge or strategic payoff. Port Royale 4 isn't a bad game. It's functional,…

The worst and most thoughtlessly made game I've ever seen. A complete disaster.

I enjoyed my time with it. The Devs seemed to have fixed a lot of the problems previous reviews complained about. The history and story were refreshing. Trade and building were made simple and the game played smooth once you got use to the UI. There could have been more complexity in commodities and township, but over all it wasn't bad, though not as addicting as Patrician3.

Very simple game that involves strategy, economics, and other attributes involved with business planning. Yet is still just a game
