About Vagrus - The Riven Realms

✦ AI summary

Lead a caravan of misfits across a ravaged dark fantasy wasteland, managing supplies, crew morale, and tactical combat while navigating a web of faction politics and branching story choices that shape both your companions and the world around you. With deep character progression, strategic turn-based battles, and emergent narratives born from your decisions, Vagrus offers a richly roleplayed journey where every expedition is an adventure unto itself.

Vagrus is an award-winning roleplaying game with a narrative focus, open-world exploration, and strong elements of strategy. The player takes the role of a vagrus - a caravan leader who strives to survive in a strange and perilous dark fantasy world by leading a traveling company on all kinds of ventures.
A vast realm is yours to explore, filled with unique locations, strange factions, and a colorful cast of characters. In order to punish the Empire for its sins, the Elder Gods unleashed their power a thousand years ago that resulted in the devastation of the realms. The continent is now a wasteland, riddled with arcane anomalies, swarming with twisted monsters, and haunted by roaming undead even after long centuries of rebuilding. A large selection of stories make up the game’s narrative in the form of events, encounters, and quests. The choices you make in these often affect your companions as well as the world around you. Pick your background from trader, mercenary, or explorer; work for factions, pursue rumors and trading opportunities; acquire wealth, gain fame, and discover hidden knowledge.
Engage in turn-based, tactical combat that involves your companions and a large variety of enemies, both humanoid and monstrous. Use a wide range of character skills as well as your own leadership-related abilities to succeed. Positioning and support skills are of paramount importance in these challenging engagements. Journeys have to be planned and prepared for carefully, lest they end in disaster. Manage your supplies, morale, and your crew’s vigor effectively to survive. Haul cargo and valuables across the wasteland or take it from others. Your crew of workers, fighters, scouts, and slaves have to be supervised closely to optimize their effectiveness.
A wide variety of companions can work for you in versatile caravan roles, such as scoutmaster, guard captain, treasure hunter, or beast handler. Each companion comes with unique combat skills, background stories, and personal quest lines that can upgrade them further when you complete them. Ally yourself with mighty factions that shape the Riven Realms with their influence on commerce, brutal wars, and their constant intrigue. From prosperous Trading Houses to criminal syndicates and religious organizations, these groups offer powerful rewards and boons to those loyal to their cause. But take heed - befriending a faction will more than likely antagonize some of the others.

✦ AI summary

Vagrus - The Riven Realms is praised for its engaging exploration, worldbuilding, interesting NPCs, and strategic preparation-based gameplay, with some calling it reminiscent of Sunless Sea but better executed. However, players are divided on the combat system—some find it awkward and wish it were either automatic or fully strategic—while others complain about artificial difficulty stemming from random unmitigatable events that can destroy hours of progress, tedious companion combat, and what they feel is poor balance.

What a fantastic game. I bought it originally in 2021 I guess, played it, and gave up. I picked it back up recently and I'm hooked. I've read other reviews and I disagree with a lot of the negative ones. In my current run of about 30 hours, I've only had to go back to a save once or twice due to incredibly poor luck. Most of the difficulty in this game is in proper preparation and making good choices before you even set out traveling. The worldbuilding in this is great. The characters aren't particularly deep or complex all the time, but there are enough interesting NPCs to find and interact with. Exploration is genuinely engaging, and finding anything from a secret shop, to a new quest hub, to engaging with the world via the factions you choose to support are all awesome. Combat, both companion combat and mass combat, is functional and what I would call fun enough. It's nothing mind-blowing, but it serves its purpose well. The options available to you at every stage of the game can be overwhelming to start with, but having so many different levers to pull is very satisfying when you succeed. The music is also great for what it is. It's mostly simple and ambient, but I rea…

The premise is interesting enough and the world seems worth exploring, but the combat system killed it for me. I think the gamer would work better with either the combat being entirely automatic (maybe with general orders by the vagrus here or there) or being more "strategy game". As it is, the combat system sits in the uncanny valley for me.

This game has a super cool idea and a fun game play loop but has ZERO respect for player time. You need to save scum so much because an unavoidable OR unmitigatable event will happen that literally destroys hours of your work. It's not a matter of "get good newb", it's just dumb randomness that makes the difficulty of the game artificial. The companion combat is HORRIBLE. It's a slog of misses, dragging battles, and spam. This game wants to be "gritty" but it's just an unpolished and unbalanced mess. Oh and 20+ dollar DLC for basically nothing....dude...-_-

Great game. Kind of reminds me of the Sunless Sea, but with an actual working economy & much more coherent writing. Interesting setting & characters, decent difficulty and overall fun & deep enough gameplay. This game deserves more recognition for sure.
