Painkiller: Black Edition

Painkiller is one of those games that almost everyone will tell you is good, but very few people have actually finished—for good reason. It's a classic case of style over substance. Painkiller absolutely nails the vibe: the art direction is fantastic, the soundtrack is excellent, and the overall aesthetic is memorable. But the developers seemed to forget that gameplay should come first. If you take Quake, strip away its dark atmosphere and stellar soundtrack, you're still left with a great game. The game isn't exactly bad, but it's incredibly clunky and sloppy. It feels like the developers either didn't have the time to properly test and fine-tune it, or they didn't really understand what made the games that inspired them so good in the first place. For example, you move very slowly despite fighting in huge arenas, so the game practically encourages bunny hopping by letting you chain jumps just by holding the space bar. But then it litters the levels with physics objects and random clutter that constantly block your movement. On top of that, the level design often becomes extremely linear and mechanically awkward. At first it seemed good, but it gets boring and s.h.i.t.t.i.e.r. And the boss-battles are a mess! A lot of time, you have to do ridiculous things to hurt them. Playing it as a young teenager was kinda fun, but playing it as an adult is bad. It feels like an unfinished game for me! And the problem is not me, it is the game! Serious Sam games are still fun to play, even the older ones, like The First Encounter! The problem is that Painkiller games are just not as good "massacre-shooters" as Serious Sam games are or as they should be! Well, let's be honest: Painkiller is kinda bad sometimes... but sometimes they are quite good! There are some good levels like "The Palace" and that shows why Painkiller is not a really good game! This genre (the "massacre-shooters") needs large levels like what the Serious Sam games have. This is why those games are good. Those have large levels with lots of enemies to kill and that makes the whole concept fun! In Painkiller the levels are mostly small and that is the main problem. "The Palace" have quite large spaces to battle and that makes it a fun level! The other levels should be the same and Painkiller would be much better! The story is laughable…

So Painkiller is one of those FPS games where i have tried it several times in the past to get into it and just bounced off. I alway felt the combat was bland, the weapons were rather limp minus the stake gun and the amount of buggy physics just all added up to a put off, everytime. Now in 2026 i just say stuff it! drop the difficulty to normal and just play through the game to tick it off and my god was it a slog of a game. Those exact same problems are still present but now with so many more FPS games from around that time period and beyond to compare to it feels worse then most. The music is quite fun though some great metal tracks to just blast enemies away too but there are just SO MANY enemies all with there own jank and annoying little things. I also think that the guns as a whole are disappointing, they all are like 2 in 1 and the feel incongruent to eachother. Levels are rather interesting to really bland mazes with generic lock you in a room and fight enemies. Even with the 30 hours it says i logged alot of it was a replay of the game around 4 5ths in because i couldnt stand the difficult, hundreds of hitscan enemies from all angles and you just have no way to really…

The first few levels are fun enough, but there are a bunch of small problems that add up quickly into a very frustrating experience if you actually try to play through the whole game. Below are some of the worst things I encountered (I played on Nightmare, the second-highest difficulty): - The game wants to be a run-and-gun boomer shooter where you're never stopping or doubling back, instead circle-strafing around large amounts of enemies and mowing them down. However, the game design doesn't support this. The first problem is souls, which heal you and help you trigger your "demon mode" if you collect them. The souls take WAY too long to appear, showing up a few seconds after the enemy is dead, usually meaning you've already passed them by and are halfway across the arena by the time they appear. They also go away too quickly, disappearing before you have a chance to collect most of them (there is an upgrade which extends the time they exist, but it doesn't help nearly enough for it to not be a problem). The result is that if you want to collect souls, you have to make immediate, awkward double-backs because a failure to do so will mean the souls disappear. But if you DO double …

Although, it feels like devs woke up one night and thought - lets just make a ton of cool ideas and yank them all together. Heck, Im surprised they havent included a space level somewhere out there (though, I think there is actually a space level in one of the addons).
