✦ AI summary

GRIME II is a metroidvania that players praise for its surreal, imaginative art direction featuring living paint creatures and striking creature design that sets it apart from the original game. The core gameplay loop of exploration, platforming, and boss encounters is described as satisfying and engaging, with players highlighting the intricate level design and flow state the platforming creates, though some note the early game pacing is a bit slow before meaningful movement upgrades arrive.

The thing about this game is that I effing love this game. There are moments where I'm like "this is just Grime 1 again, what new is it offering?" But dude, it's just so fun and satisfying to conquer. Of the 3 Vania sequels to Hollow Knight, Blasphemous, and Grime, this is my chosen horse. Admittedly the theme and creature design appeal to me the most. Grime 1 was mostly Rock Monsters...and those are here too (and I love them). But now they've added all manner of ART Monsters. There's this whole mad background of living paint and living canvas and living disembodied hands that make the art. The designers just went off. Further, after Hexen, this is the most maze-ass maze game I've played. It's a Maze Simulator for real. Without the map and all the icons you can place the game would be impossible. So it's kinda like playing a meta level Pac-man the way you always have to look at the map as you would in a Ubisoft game, collecting all the icons. Except your former self was who put down those icons! Great secrets telegraphed well (a problem i have in the other Vanias). Tho sometimes I think "that's it?" The OCD map clearing is enough reward for me tho. I do miss Yon…

This a weird ass game, and I absolutely loved it. The surreal world of Grime is just as intriguing this time around, and that's really the heart of this genre for me.

Excellent game, finished it after getting every achievement. Fun platforming, and great bosses. All around, it scratched the metrovania itch quite well.

Please don't allow any more metroidvania games to be made with bad graphics. We need a law in place that demands modern graphics for old style games (Grime 2 meets this criteria and does not need to go to prison)

This is an absolutely amazing evolution from the first game. There's so much content that I thought I was about to beat the game but it turns out I'm only ~70% through. The platforming puts me in such a good flow state and when I mess up it's always on me, not the game. The amount of secret areas parallel Silksong. The only negative thing I can think of is that the beginning of the game is a little slow. It takes a few hours to get a really meaningful movement upgrade. Regardless, if you enjoy playing Silksong or Metroid, I highly recommend it.
