Republique

Republique is a pretty unique stealth adventure that puts you behind the cameras rather than directly in the shoes of the protagonist, making you feel more like Big Brother, always watching. Guiding Hope through a dystopian surveillance state by hacking security systems, opening doors, and distracting guards is a pretty interesting concept, and it gives the game a different feel from most stealth games. The stealth itself can get a bit repetitive, and the camera controls can sometimes be annoying, a design artefact from when the game was originally a mobile title. Still, the atmosphere, interesting story, and excellent voice acting kept me invested throughout. The game can also feel more like a puzzle game at times, as you have to think ahead about how to protect Hope and figure out safe routes for her rather than simply sneaking past guards yourself. It's also not a particularly long game; it took me around 10 hours to finish, and it's completely free, so there's really no reason not to give it a try. There's a VR version as well, which is also free, although I haven't played it, so I can't really comment on how good it is.

I don't even know how to rate this game. Everything was good but the ending... I really like the concept of society there. Seemingly perfect, no judgement about your race, about your preferences, just don't ask questions and do your job and you'll be good. But to operate this "perfect" society you need not-so-perfect people. And I think it really does well on depicting this "perfect" society: almost all books banned, films I think as well, no communication with the world beyond this cage. So the choice is: be completely controlled and have a "perfect" life or be free. Makes you think. 7/10

horrible camera and bad saving system.

Played this on mobile years ago. Even better now it's PC. A very original game, fun, exciting with real depth. Very well designed in terms of game flow and story.

Republique is a stealth adventure that I think has a really interesting idea behind it. I am helping a woman named Hope escape from a totalitarian state, but I do not control her in the usual way. Instead, I am watching her through the surveillance system and jumping between security cameras to guide her through the facility. I can open doors, hack systems, distract guards and keep an eye on what is happening around her. The whole thing is built around government surveillance, so the camera system is not just a gimmick. It is basically the main way I experience the world. I really like the atmosphere. The world of Metamorphosis feels oppressive without needing to constantly throw action at me, and the idea of being watched everywhere fits perfectly with the way the gameplay works. I am looking through cameras, reading information about people and searching the environment for ways to get Hope past security. There is something satisfying about finding the right camera and then using it to work out what I should do next. The story also gives me plenty of reasons to care about what is happening, especially as I learn more about Hope and the strange society she is trapped inside. The…
