✦ AI summary

Backrooms: Lost Tape impresses players with its strong visual design, excellent audio and soundtrack, and thoughtful level design that creates distinct emotional experiences across varied liminal spaces. However, opinions diverge sharply on pacing and engagement, with some finding it captivating enough to play for hours while others find it boring, and technical issues like softlocks have hindered some playthroughs. Most fans of the backrooms and liminal space genre consider it worth playing, though some wish there were more content.

bittersweet, but fitting.

I am a bacrooms and liminal-themed games enjoyer and this game has been my favourite so far, out of all I've played. The visuals and level design are very good and progressing through locations feels perfect. Each level and location is not too long, but neither is it too short, just enough time to let you enjoy and feel it. Some locations are short, some are longer, and what's interesting about that is it feels like each level is not just random backrooms-themed constructions, it feels like each time the dev tries to make a specific aesthetic and emotional point. It's an actual emotional journey. The Audio, music and sound design. It's PEAK. The soundtrack is very rich and not generic, unlike many other backrooms games that feature "default liminal space ambient.mp3" for every location. One of the main reasons I loved this game. I'm a musician and music/sound design mean a ton for me. Some levels there's no music, just ambience, some levels there are different tracks for different parts of the location, which makes it a very interesting audio journey because, as I said, music here is not generic, it leads you through a whole emotional and aesthetic experience. Wish there were more hours to play, thats the only downside to this game. It's not short either dont get me wrong but because it's too good. It makes you want more.

I got softlocked at the level 94 section, as it would not turn night no matter now long I wandered. I have only played Josh's tape. Furthermore I wouldn't consider this a well paced and enjoyable game in the sense of it's construction. The first level offers a long boring collection puzzle which takes far more time than most of the game until level 94 as the experience broke at that point despite reloading multiple times. The entity which attacks is very non-threatening and the graphics are worse than the complex and were much more intense for my computer to run in comparison. Please fix this softlock and I will continue this game.
