Strike Suit Zero

The controls are not good enough to warrant playing this mediocre game.

As someone that grew up with Robotech/Macross and a love for space combat, this is my go to game. There are not that many titles out there I feel, that scratch that itch I have but thankfully this is one of those titles that fill that gap.

While this game is simple it is what space dogfights and mech combat are all about, it's worth having hope this review ends up on their director's cut version. I played through this game twice it's short but sweet and if you want more of it without doing a campaign strike suit infinity can cover that.

The moment you transform into the Strike Suit and unleash a Macross-style missile barrage on an enemy capital ship, you feel genuinely unstoppable. The large-scale battles with allied and enemy ships firing across the void look stunning, and the soundtrack has this eerie maritime quality that somehow fits perfectly. That said, the game wears out its welcome faster than it should: nearly every mission boils down to the same 'destroy these targets before the timer runs out' formula, difficulty spikes can be brutal when you've missed upgrade objectives, and the story barely registers. The final mission is an inexplicable detour into tunnel-flying that feels like a completely different game. Still, if you're hungry for space combat with a mech twist and can find it on sale, the highs are worth the repetition.

When Star Wars: TIE Fighter meets Gundam: Encounters In Space, and both binge-eat seven pounds of anabolic steroids in one sitting before doing the deed, you get this game. First-person mode is probably the nuttiest experience I've ever had in a space game. The sheer intensity of the combat is almost overwhelming, and even on Normal difficulty it's very hard. You will die a lot, especially to flak guns, if you don't master the use of thrusters, Pursuit Mode and Strike Mode. Despite this, the game never really forces you to use either mode, aside from Strike Mode's energy bar (which you fill up by killing enemies). It's up to the player to determine which configuration will work best for any given objective. Can easily recommend this to anyone who's a fan of classic 1990s space dogfighting sims and mecha anime. EDIT: This game can be pretty buggy and unstable at times, and the final mission is extremely underwhelming, so if you're not sure about buying this game, wait for a sale.
