About Kingdom Eighties

✦ AI summary

Pedal through an '80s town as The Leader, recruiting neighborhood kids to build defenses and run shops while fending off mysterious Greed monsters attacking nightly. This story-driven tower defense adventure blends base-building strategy with rad retro aesthetics, synth soundtrack, and solo or co-op gameplay that captures the magic of summer camps and bike rides.

Grab your bike, pedal off and beat back the Greed to save your town. Kingdom Eighties is a story-based tower defense spin-off to the award-winning Kingdom series set in the ‘80s. This is a singleplayer and local co-op (or online co-op via Steam Remote Play Together) adventure with base building and strategy elements, rad aesthetics and a soundtrack inspired by the sweet synth tunes of the ‘80s.Something disturbing has broken free from the shadows and it's up to you as The Leader to drive the evil back by recruiting your friends and other kids from the neighborhood. Together you will build your defenses and protect the town from the relentless attacks by the mysterious Greed monsters that are trying to steal your family heirloom, the Crown of Creation. For what nefarious purposes, who knows?

Muster and Deploy the Neighborhood Watch

Gather your three unique companions, each with special skills, and recruit other kids to build defenses, collect coins and… run a lemonade stand and a pizza shop (among many other things)! Manage the people you recruit, unlock tools and more importantly gear your crew up for the horrors that come at night.

Captivating story about something dangerous lurking in the shadows

A force, dormant for centuries, has somehow broken free in the ‘80s; Kingdom Eighties is a comic-sized story about the small town Monarch that has come under threat by an unknown evil. It has fallen upon you, as The Leader, to defend it and save the day. Rally the Summer Camp when an evil force of goopy Greed monsters attack and try to break your defenses. Where did they come from and where the heck are all the adults? Uncover clues and discover what happened to everybody else as you repel and fight the Greed back.

Pixels, Neon Lights and Synths

Kingdom's iconic, handcrafted art style is back, now with a neon touch coming directly from the ‘80s aesthetics. Chill and vibe with the synthy OST from Andreas Hald, and travel back to the wonder days of bike riding and summer camps, when everything seemed possible.

Survival Mixtapes Mode

In the true arcade style, Kingdom Eighties features a new game mode: Survival Mixtapes! Bring your best tactics and strategies to fend off progressively harder waves of Greed in four different episodes including “Back to the Suburbs” and “Greed, First Goo”. Make on-the-fly decisions as certain buildings’ special abilities are disabled and levels feature random mounts. This game mode is sure to put your skills to the test!

✦ AI summary

Kingdom Eighties is criticized by most players as a stripped-down rehash of Kingdom Two Crowns with minimal new content, dressed up in an overly emphasized 1980s aesthetic that feels more parody than genuine, combined with a forgettable story featuring low-effort cutscenes and clichéd characters. Common complaints include the lack of new mechanics or meaningful improvements, only around 6 hours of gameplay, poor pacing between chapters, technical bugs, and a tonal disconnect from the beloved medieval Kingdom atmosphere.

Such a corny half baked story line that feels so left field and doesn't even feel like kingdom. It feels super superficial and feels like it lack any sincerity or care, almost as if someone who doesn't care about the game made the game then I saw sweet baby inc in the credits and it all made sense. I haven't played played two crows but this feels like a huge step backwards from new lands, super disappointed in the story and honestly it ruins the kingdom vibe for me so I'm refusing to accept the new canon and enjoy what I have of the beauty of the old. This makes me fearful of the sequel and if I could take my money back for this one, I would.

I would of been annoyed if this was a DLC due to the lack of content - but fair enough, but to out-right make it a standalone game is diabolical. This is just a re-skin of kingdom two crowns with the same mobs, and same mechanics just with side-kicks that follow you around. Low budget / effort cut-scenes that are so boring and anticlimactic. Cringy artstyle and execution, I like the retro 90s vibe in videogames, but this just felt like a parody more than anything - it was so over done and in your face with low quality cutscenes whilst the actual gameplay was just 99% basic Kingdom gameplay. Bad story and pacing with no clear episode ending / transitions so you sometimes move to the next stage without fully unlocking everything or getting your money bag full. Honestly really bad and boring, they somehow made a 2d game where you build towers more boring than the first

I love the Kingdom games; anyone who has read my past reviews knows I find them to be the perfect fusion of Zen base-building, exploration, and survival crafting. The titles are deceptively casual, until they are suddenly not; while the early hours are slow and steady, there is an exponentially compounding difficulty curve. (It gets harder the longer you play). This, combined with the near permanence in decision-making, means that poor choices early on can lead to late-game failure. You are on the clock. Don't **** up. In that regard Kingdom is quite an unforgiving franchise, a contrast to its seemingly sluggish pace and heavenly pixelated art style. I'm sad to say I put off 80's for the longest time, despite its modest price tag, because it just looked too "different"; mainly the short length, lower difficulty and emphasis on story. However, these facets turned out to be a boon, not a negative. In fact I'd go so far as to say it is my favorite entry in the franchise. The music, visuals, slower pace and streamlined gameplay are a godsend. It's the first Kingdom game where I was able to play on any difficulty beyond "easy". While familiarity with previous titles is HIGHLY recommend…

This game feels less like a new game and more like a DLC for Kingdom Two Crowns. There’s honestly not much that makes it different from Kingdom Two Crowns. No new mechanics, no real graphical improvements or updates — it’s basically the same game with a different theme. Instead of the medieval setting, this one takes place in a 1980s/90s-style American town and city. Personally, I think the medieval setting looked much better. They also added a story, but it’s pretty cliché. It feels like a typical Hollywood movie about American teenagers. There are cutscenes, but there’s no actual animation — just still images with text underneath them. The game is also pretty short. It has four chapters, and you can probably finish the main story in around 6 hours. After completing the story, a Survival Mode unlocks, but I didn’t play it because, honestly, I had already gotten enough out of the game. As much as I’ve criticized this game, I have to admit that I still enjoyed it because I’m a Kingdom fan. If you already like the Kingdom formula, you’ll probably enjoy this too. But if you’re looking for something new or expecting the game to bring new mechanics to the series, this probably isn’t…

It was fun up until I ran into the chapter 3 bug. I tried all the fixes suggested in the discussions page to no avail and it looks like the devs aren't particularly keen on fixing it. If the bug ever gets fixed, I'll finish the game and adjust my review.

Honesty, it was incredibly short with repetitive gameplay. Not worth it.
