Antagonist

It starts as a really fun game that has lots of references to many other games. Names were changed of course. I even recognize the one from Borderlands series (thanks Ayan). It's funny and quirky and it helps that the D'vil is hot and Ralph is not that bad looking and at first you are like "Yeah! This is a good challenge!" And then... Then you get to a certain part and... You can maybe do one or two actions before you are constantly Staggered (stunned) and die over and over again. The challenge is sky high (it's not even a Boss!) on that one fight and since you can't control your partner (AI) or whom they target... Much less what moves they use... It's over in an instant. Staggered also means that your action bar is slowed so you have no choice but to just sit there and wait... While the enemies flail on you and... -.-" Also the way this game works... There is no grinding for levels. You get levels/skills given to you at certain points and that's it. Overall... That non-Boss battle just ruined it for me. RPG Maker strikes again! Antagonist is one of hundreds of low effort retro-pixel RPG Maker asset/construction kit flips spamming the Steam catalog, made with the RPG Maker video game construction kit... in their own words, "Our easy to use tools are simple enough for a child." While pretty much every RPG Maker "game" is essentially a bunch of low quality/canned assets from RPG Maker coupled with a cringeworthy high school anime club fan fiction, here, the art seems to be non-asset flipped (as far as I can see), however, the cringeworthy high school anime club fan fiction remains. As with all RPG Maker games, the poor quality engine displays badly in fullscreen and doesn't have full HD support or any graphics tweaking options, making this unacceptable for any dedicated modern PC gamer. The point can be made that the intention of RPG Maker is to make demos and small games to pass around friends, and not so untalented amateurs can use it as a substitute for the skills of a "professional" game development team. Super charming small game! Takes about 3 hours to finish, although I was reading the dialogue out loud while playing with a friend. If you're a fan of unique RPG maker projects, you'll like this! Plays similar to a visual novel with RPG combat in between dialogue. Laughed a lot while playing and got pretty into it, especially with the climax of the story. The most fun part of the game is the characters- lots of parodies and puns, was a joy to play through.

Very fun and adorable plot! I didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I have. Love the art and the characters too, especially Ralph and Teeth, they have my whole heart TT Ngl I thought I'd be able to breeze through this just by spamming attacks and abilities, but I had to redo a few fights and start taking them seriously lol. The fight mechanics is interesting, though may need more polish. I really like how the combos work, it's not the easiest to match your companion's moves. Although I often forget that the "darkness" mode is even an option, and at the same time I do wish we could combo with companions even in that mode. Overall very enjoyable.

Don't trust the reviews that say this is a chill easy game. It's hard. This is like the worst kind of rpg where you can't really grind your way out of it, instead you have to carefully manage resources and use skills properly. I just wanted a chill joke game. It's still good just be careful going into this game.
