Sword of Asumi

A decent enough visual novel that actually managed to keep my attention which is not what I can say for most of them.

I'm having very mixed feelings about this, as I get the impression that the writers attempted to create something interesting and unique but ended up with trouble to realize the initial concept. The premise and prologue are very intriguing, the concept seems exciting and I had the impression that a lot of thoughts went into the world-building after reading the Codex. However when the actual "mission" started, the genre just turned into normal slice-of-life and all of the suspense and urgency suddenly disappeared. Especially the romance felt incredibly unfitting and forced, not only is it extremely rushed and undeveloped (you can literally romance characters after knowing them for two days) but it's additionaly simply out of character for Asumi, considering her situation. The characters by themselves are pretty decent though, the dialogues feel rather awkward at times, but I found them likable regardless. I believe the plot would've been great if the romance got left out and instead there were more scenes of Asumi actually doing something to progress with the mission. Also I would've loved some more lore input, flashbacks or maybe some perspective changes to other relevant charact…

This game has a beautiful opening theme song. That's it though. The characters and the plot are nonsense. Most VNs I give bad ratings to is because the VN is boring - but this one actively aggravated me with how bad the writing was. For the longest time I didn't review this because I felt like you shouldn't spread negativity, but recently I realized reviews are supposed to help you make decisions about what to spend money on, so for anyone who's reading this - there are just much much better VNs out there.

Sword of Asumi is a compact but ambitious narrative-driven experience developed and published by Dharker Studios that leans heavily into alternate-history worldbuilding and character-focused storytelling. Set in a reimagined version of feudal Japan where the samurai caste never relinquished its authority, the game places the player in the role of Asumi, a lethal operative of the Black Clan tasked with infiltrating a prestigious academy. Her mission—identify and neutralize a growing rebellion from within—immediately frames the story around secrecy, moral tension, and the uneasy balance between duty and personal agency. The setting is one of the game’s strongest hooks. Rather than presenting a purely historical backdrop, Sword of Asumi imagines a society where tradition and power have calcified into rigid institutions, policed by Justicars and governed by a Council of Nobles. This political structure gives weight to even small narrative choices, as Asumi’s actions ripple through a tightly controlled social hierarchy. It's an interesting premise with a lack of polish. Story seems to be disjointed and there are a lot of typing errors. Still, had fun exploring it.
