It's insane that there is still no native Linux version of the BFG edition after 14 years despite the original DOOM 3 and Resurrection of Evil having one. The BFG edition is the Windows version of the game, and the only Proton version that works is Luxtorpedia, which does not allow cloud saves. There are off-Steam solutions to fixing BFG, but that shouldn't be the only option for Linux users. DOOM 3 is a GREAT game, and is one of the best DOOM games next to DOOM 1 and 2. You SHOULD play it, but play the original versions instead of the BFG edition if you don't want a massive Lutris/GitHub induced headache.1 found this helpful
Terribly optimized. Not fit for running on modern computers, or any computer for that matter. Can't speak on the merits of the game because it's entirely tainted by non-functional software design. At this point I think I've quit the game on 6 separate occasions over years because I just keep thinking it won't be that terrible, but then it is. I would strongly suggest skipping this entirely unless you like non-game frustrations in the way of what otherwise seems like a fun and decent game.
everything about this game is great
It's just a perfectly serviceable FPS game, fun for the most part. There are better ways of playing Doom 3 and the included Doom classics, but really, there's nothing much wrong with Doom BFG Edition. It's perfectly fine and playable and a good way to spend an afternoon. Get it on a sale, maybe.
Original Doom 3 with dhewm3 source port is the better version. BFG Edition has unskippable cutscenes, can't use console to change FOV, and the horror is gone since you have tons of ammo and a mounted flashlight. BUT it has The Lost Mission which is pretty good.
Game is a classic, amazing especially on newer build machines.
