Undying Fortress

I've almost exclusively played World of Darkness games from Choice of Games. However, Undying Fortress really piqued my interest, so I bought it right away. And I absolutely don't regret it. This is a thrilling and dynamic story with a dark atmosphere and fantastic ideas. I had a blast!

really tried to get into it, I have played a decent amount of COG and HG games, not my cup of tea, not the biggest fan of the writing style and certain unavoidable themes

You play as a disgraced former student of the Imperial Academy, now making a living as part of a mercenary company. When the floating fortress that has hovered high in the sky for nearly a millennium comes crashing to earth, you are tapped by the Imperial Crown to lead an expedition inside to discover it’s secrets. What you find and what you do will determine your fate and future, as well the very survival of the kingdom and the people under your charge. Yeonsoo Julian Kim does my favorite thing with fantasy world-building—she lets you figure it out for yourself. You context clues as you go along and brief natural explanations that only give you just enough to understand the current context of what’s going on. Great CoG with rewarding choices, a tight narrative and characters which didn't feel contrived. Thoroughly recommended.

Great story, tightly focused but with enough choices to matter. Great relationships and exploration of what necromancy would mean to people.

I originally got this game out of passing curiosity, something to pass the time with. But the game ended up drawing me in far more than I would have expected. The narration of the game gives you great control over how the story unfolds and what kind of person your character becomes. The crux of the game makes you responsible for the lives and wellbeing of many different characters, some of which are nameless escorts and others are people of depth and backstory that you can develop close relations with. The game does not shy away from the consequences of decisions, forcing you to carefully weigh the risks of every choice as you navigate your expedition through an increasingly dangerous dungeon where there are no do-overs unless you are prepared to restart from the beginning. So what started out as a bit of pass-time reading turned into an exercise in leadership, where I could vividly feel the weight of responsibility, the intimidation of the uncertainty, and the rush of betting lives on reckless acts of desperation. Giving this simple text-based game an echo of realism that no other game in my steam library can claim to have achieved. In short, I am impressed.
