About A Chair in a Room : Greenwater
New locomotion options, updated music, graphics and many more optimisations available in a free update.
A Chair in a Room: Greenwater is a tense Virtual Reality horror game set in America’s Deep South. Drawing on elements of Southern Gothic and using settings of derelict towns, run-down motels and murky, decaying swamps, A Chair in a Room will take you through an investigation of institutional corruption, religious immorality and murder, which can only be unlocked by searching deep within your own psyche.
A calibration room will allow you get comfortable in VR but once you call the elevator, you begin your story as patient no. 6079 in The Greenwater Institute, with no recollection of who you are or what you did to be here. Dark visions bring your lucidity into question and only the doctor’s supply of medication can suppress those who wish to haunt you.
Gameplay is a seamless weave of interaction and narrative that wraps exploration and tense horror in rich environmental storytelling to create something that is unique to VR.
The story is broken down into six chapters of around 20 to 30 minutes in length to allow for intervals in play while enjoying the story.

even in 2026 this games is terrifying. wish wolf & wood would make more horror vr games
One of if not my favorite stand alone VR story game of all time. I have gotten it for so many other people to watch them play it. the Story is amazing and well written. The scares are tasteful and impactful. You will expect to be scared and that anticipation will keep you scared. There is no monster or villain. No chasseing or fighting. Nothing to run from even. Just you with your thoughts and memories trying to make sense of it all. Don't go into it joking and laughing, go in with curiosity and awareness and you will not be disappointed by this decade old game.
I’m a big horror fan. I’ve been in standalone VR for years on the Quest 2 & 3, but only got into PCVR properly in the last year. Horror and zombie games are my thing, so I’d heard about A Chair in a Room for a long time and finally picked it up in the last Steam sale. With all the ‘Best Horror Game’ claims floating around online, I went in expecting something intense. Is it scary? Does it make you scream or want to rip the headset off? For me: no. It’s atmospheric, but I need a lot more to get the hairs on my neck standing up. The puzzles aren’t difficult — they feel more like padding to stretch out what is essentially a story-driven experience. Most of my playtime was actually spent getting it to behave properly on the Quest 3 and then mopping up the achievements. I did enjoy the game overall, but it definitely feels janky and dated in 2026 — which is fair, because it is a 10‑year‑old PCVR title and VR horror has moved on a lot since then. Do I recommend it? Yes… with conditions. If you scare easily, you’ll probably love it. If you’re harder to rattle, it’s still worth playing as a piece of early PCVR horror history, especially if you’re new to PCVR and want to see where things st…
Quite the experience! It took a bit to get the controls to match up with my quest 3 controllers (I followed a tip from the community discussions) and it was worth it. Creepy and fun. It was NOT the ending I expected.
A Chair in a Room: Greenwater is a deeply atmospheric virtual reality horror experience developed and published by Wolf & Wood Interactive Ltd, and it stands as one of the more thoughtful examples of how VR can be used to tell an unsettling, emotionally driven story rather than simply deliver cheap scares. From the outset, the game frames the player as Patient No. 6079, confined to the ominous Greenwater Institute, a place that feels less like a hospital and more like a decaying monument to forgotten suffering. This setup immediately establishes a tone of vulnerability and uncertainty, positioning the experience as a psychological descent rather than a traditional survival horror adventure. The game’s greatest strength lies in its atmosphere. Each environment you explore feels carefully crafted to evoke unease, whether it’s the sterile yet deteriorating corridors of the institute, the claustrophobic interiors of abandoned buildings, or the damp, foreboding swamps that surround Greenwater. These locations are grounded enough to feel believable, which makes their gradual distortion all the more disturbing. Instead of relying on constant threats, the game lets tension simmer, using l…
One of the earliest VR games for me, and one of the best horror experiences of the early VR period.
