Like others who enjoy RPGs I had played many of the old classics and spamming the same abilities through menus with key memory on felt like holding down the 'A' button leads to assured victory. These are some of the ways Alone changes the game on what a classic RPG can be.
- Story - Alone is somewhat light on the narrative front. Most of the game's story is optional and much of it can be completed in or out of order and without speaking to the characters you find throughout the game. Though it drives your actions for much of your play, the way you engage with the story is up to you.
- Exploration - There are no maps here. No overworld where you grow to enormous proportions and can travel to the next area in a few steps. The path forward is sometimes hidden, sometimes blocked, and sometimes back the way you came. Your only hope in Alone is to continue exploring and working your way in around and back through the numerous environments.
- Character Growth - Your characters in Alone do not acquire skills naturally. Instead, points will be earned from levels that can be spent in two unique skill books to each character. Don't like your current skills? Visit the pub to reset them. Great control is given to the player to determine how they want each party member to feel. Your weapons will also provide you special abilities, so the customization does not stop at the skill books. Your gear can be upgraded in a few ways to further augment your preferred strategies.
- Combat - If you have a love for classic turn-based RPG games, you'll know many of the older installments spare no expense building hype for that final boss – only to have them fall to your bottomless supply of potions. Alone wants to throw that out the window and introduce more punishing and difficult bosses as a result. Potions may heal you for a substantial amount, but that health is then lost again over time. The turn order can also be manipulated by clever players who take advantage of the ACCEL system. Spells / items / actions will have an ACCEL value to them that causes that characters next turn to come up quicker by that amount. Your enemies will target the strongest among you and do everything they can to throw a wrench in your plans. Alone tries to create a more engaging combat experience by requiring pattern recognition and thoughtful choices about the order in which attacks occur.

I love the FF vibes but this game definitely has its own identity. Love the Feel for each character, story and combat wise. Battles do require you to think and some cannot be rushed, especially the Boss Fights which is a plus. Overall this game does feed you Nostalgia craving with Fresh ideas!! EDIT review! I got a response and help with the puzzle. I wasn't expecting a response so I am super thankful because I was enjoying the game. Now if I can't figure it out after the help then i'm an idiot. I like the game. Cute characters, i enjoy turn based video games fighting but like that you can see who is next in line to attack which made me change some of my tactics that I typically do. i also like that you can see the enemy encounters so you can try to avoid them. i like the "freebie" healing stuff you find in the game on trees too. Unfortunately I cannot complete the game because of a puzzle in the desert. Perhaps I am an incapable of such things but that one baffles me and i can't continue on the game because of it. Because there isn't a community for the game I can't really look for help.1 found this helpful
Its a fun and gentle game that i enjoy playing for a couple of hours a night. Not for thrill seekers. Great for kids and adults.1 found this helpful
After my first play-through ending in just under 17 hours with 18 hours total for the game one word to describe it. WOW! Story: The story seemed very sudden at first but it was expected since you are collecting yourself finding your friends steadily. Learning their style and what they should be used for as you get some time to learn each character. The diversity in the characters is your standard, healer, mage, tank, dps, and general purpose-ish. I expected more colorful dialogue from such colorful characters. After boss fights a few times I would go to the hub and see for any dialogue but was met with the exact same script each time. Some more development to care for them would be nice. A certain character that essentially swaps sides the tiny bit of dialogue we get with them was just enough for me to like the but it was too late. However the characters feelings for that double agent matched mine and i give them credit for that. The main driving plot point of the game seems a bit undermined when its done and then you have to go further beyond that. However the ending has an incredible twist that will most definitely have me going back for a second run at maybe a different outcome …1 found this helpful
A good story, interesting characters and of course a party that you can spoil with equipment and skills/level up, all that with nice graphics and there you go...an perfect RPG (for me!). Now this one has good graphics. But that's it. The characters are flat..even if you can chat with them...if you call 1 sentences chat. The story is meeh at best (you are stuck on unknow territory meet a stranger and of course jump to do her quest). But the biggest problem is your party. You see the enemies are tough....and you gain next to nothing from fighting them. The few treasure chests...nothing special. It is worse that you encounter enemies that whip your whole party early on without the possibility of farming. Oh, you can set the difficult of the enemies in the option menu....from default 0 up to 300% (so no easy way out). It gets better...there is no way to run from an fight and the (visible) monsters have homing missile feature and can run faster than you.
My playtime says 24 hours, but the reality is that, despite my best efforts, I've only played this game for 45 minutes or so. The first time I tried to load it up, I thought it crashed at start, but it actually ran undetected without an icon or any way to interact with it until I shut down my computer. The second time I tried, it ran, but then crashed and corrupted my game file when I tried to save the game. There may be a good game in here, but I have no way of knowing.
