About Cultist Simulator

✦ AI summary

Build and lead a cult in this narrative card game set in a 1920s world of eldritch mysteries, where every combination of cards shapes your unique story of ambition, corruption, and forbidden knowledge. Recruit followers, uncover arcane secrets, outwit authorities, and pursue transcendence across multiple playthroughs with a legacy system that lets your choices echo through generations.

Cultist Simulator is a game of apocalypse and yearning from Alexis Kennedy, creator of Fallen London and Sunless Sea. Play as a seeker after unholy mysteries, in a 1920s-themed setting of hidden gods and secret histories. Perhaps you're looking for knowledge, or power, or beauty, or revenge. Perhaps you just want the colours beneath the skin of the world. In this roguelike narrative card game, what you find may transform you forever. Every choice you make, from moment to moment, doesn't just advance the narrative - it also shapes it. Become a scholar of the unseen arts. Search your dreams for sanity-twisting rituals. Craft tools and summon spirits. Indoctrinate innocents. Seize your place as the herald of a new age. In this 20-40 hour game, you'll:
  • Combine cards to tell your own story in a rich, Lovecraftian world of ambition, appetite and abomination. Corrupt your friends. Consume your enemies. There is never only one history.
  • Found a cult, dedicated to the Red Grail, or the Witch-and-Sister, or the Forge of Days. Recruit Believers and promote them to Disciples to serve as burglars, researchers, cat's-paws. Use your disciples to keep you fed - or feed on your disciples.
  • Unravel arcane, unacknowledged mysteries. Translate grimoires and glean their lore. Locate and pillage the Star Shattered Fane. Penetrate the realm of the Hours, and win a place in their service. Perhaps - if you are very cunning - you may even glimpse the Mansus.
  • Outwit rivals, investigators and the increasingly suspicious Authorities. Your own altered Appetites may force you to act abominably, but your Cause must not be stopped.
  • Transcend death with a story-driven legacy system. Perhaps your inheritors will complete the Rite of the Crucible Soul. Perhaps they'll find peace in a pleasing career. Perhaps they'll bring the Dawn.

A technical, but intriguing card game. The key to success is endless experimentation and meticulous organization. A seemingly empty board becomes gradually filled with increasingly complex mechanics and interactions. A peaceful, yet challenging game. You set the pace! Admittedly, I had to pull the wiki just to know what the heck is going on. Otherwise, it's an immersing experience if you have the patience and imagination. 10/10 would recommend! P.S. Please make a sequel! Different settings and sources for reason/creativity is all I need. No need for fancy mechanics, just a sequential chapter in the same universe.

I'm so confused that every time I make sense of a minor game mechanic in any way I feel like the smartest most intelligent most interesting person in the world and that's a high I crave more of

It will try to suppress you and make you succumb, but if you are strong and follow the Mother of Ants and the Door in the Eye you shall enter that which has no walls, the host of the birthplace of those which came from stone and flesh and blood. Use your goggles to find the compendium and consult it, if need be. Take what you need, when you need it, and much time unnecessarily spent shall be saved, although some say it is necessary instead. I attach the secret that Darius told Alexander at Issus. Use it wisely.

This concept for this game sounded very intriguing and the fact that it was award-winning (plus on sale at a significant discount) made it a seeming no-brainer to pick up. Well, I think I regret that decision. The game really pulls you in the first 30min - 1hr, but after that you feel like you hit a wall. The game doesn't really help you in any way or give you any real advice or direction. I've tried all the different characters and options but nothing really seemed to "click" at any point. There are some very vague goals set for you to follow but every single thing you do just feels like a grind-y slog. If a game hasn't hooked you with its loop by the 2-3hr mark then I just don't think it's worth it to continue. I'm totally willing to admit this just may not be the right game for me, but I'd consider watching some let's plays for this game if you're on the fence and I think it'll just about scratch the itch you may have to pick it up.
