About Dragon Star Varnir

Story

In a world where the bones of an ancient beast tower over the land...

The knight Zephy is part of an order whose role is to hunt down witches – people seen as cursed beings for giving birth to dragons.

When he is almost killed on one of these missions, two mysterious witches save him from the brink of death by feeding him dragon blood.

Granted new magic abilities by their efforts, he soon finds his fate intertwined with the witches and reluctantly joins them to fight against an Empire out to destroy his kind, ruthless dragon hunters, and a witch more powerful than any in existence.

Can they fight all this and save themselves, or will his new allies succumb to the dragon’s curse…?

Key Features

3 Tiers to Fear – In this unique take on the classic turn-based battle system, players take flight and charge at dragons in three vertically-oriented tiers. Strategize how you position your party members as certain dragons have strengths and weaknesses depending on what tier you attack from. Some giant dragons can also swipe through all three tiers, so tread carefully!

Awaken Your Inner Dragon – When attacking an enemy during battle, players fill up their Dragon Gauge. Once maxed, they can transform and harness the power of dragons, drastically increasing their armor and unlocking abilities!

Welcome to Devour Hour – Once an enemy dragon is weakened, players can utilize the Devour skill to obtain a skill tree unique to that dragon. With multiple dragons roaming the land, players can explore different dragon skill trees and combinations that can lead you to victory!

Madness or Riches? – Three witches depend on you to bring them dragon’s blood as food. Starve them, and they go mad. Overfeed them, and they become a dragon! Will you keep them alive or sacrifice them to obtain rare items? The choice is ultimately yours, but each decision you make can change your ending.

Dragon Star Varnir, developed by Idea Factory and Compile Heart and published by Idea Factory International, is a JRPG that stands out within its niche by embracing a darker, more somber tone than many of its contemporaries. While it carries the studio’s familiar structure—character-driven storytelling, turn-based combat, and visual novel-style presentation—it attempts to elevate itself through heavier themes and a few experimental mechanics. The result is a game that feels ambitious and distinctive, even if it doesn’t always deliver on every aspect of that ambition. The narrative centers on Zephy, a knight whose role is to hunt witches in a world where they are feared and persecuted. After a life-altering encounter, he finds himself transformed into the very thing he once hunted, forcing him to confront the harsh reality behind the witch curse. In this world, witches are bound to dragons growing within them, and their existence is defined by a tragic cycle—either they starve and lose control, or they succumb to the dragon’s emergence. This premise gives the story a strong emotional foundation, exploring themes of survival, prejudice, and inevitability. As Zephy becomes involved w…

My Tamagotchi can't possibly be this adorable! This game was originally announced on 6/14/18 for PS4 in Japan, with its Western release following in June of 2019 and PC in October of the same year for those curious. This game features a unique style of combat where it's fought on 3 different levels: bottom, middle, and top. There are some monsters that can hit multiple levels, but nothing too terrifying; you should always expect, though, that bosses can hit multiple levels. Now, regarding characters and design, the game has a medieval aesthetic to it with knights, bandits, and witches. The super forms of the main party all have a dragon aesthetic to them, as implied by the title.

Bad points: 1. Needing to switch character to traverse the area. ---------------- 2. Plot and Flow Play halfway, some of the dialogue makes no sense. The plot is that, you eat dragon meat, you can prevent yourself from turning into dragon, which is fine, but what the characters does, is mind boggling. Character A likes the party, character A sees her friend turning into dragon from not eating dragon meat. Character A still refuses to eat dragon meat because she likes the party. <<<What?! Character B felt like she's turning into dragon, party need to go through a barrier which they must eat the boss dragon's meat, else they will turn into dragon. Character B secretly skip on eating the meat, and go through the barrier, only to say 'Get away from me!' Why? Why not just NOT go through the barrier? Why choose to go through, then tell the party to get away from her? Party met Character C, character C assumingly killed party's families. Party let character C join them and help character C. Even though this is a fantasy game, and there are magics and fictional monsters, atleast make the plot and flow make sense! ------------------------------- 3. Devour mechanics: Every single …

What a solid turn based JRPG. Some of it is generic, but its very enjoyable and grinding for levels was a fun challenge. Im ay lvl 300, and got most of the trophies. I wish they had been a little more clear on ending requirements, and searching for some quest items is tedious, but overall i highly reccommend this. It has the usual IF and CH harem feel and lewdness, which is tolerable for the fun builds and magic.
