About Gary the Gull

Gary the Gull is an VR Interactive Animated Short Film where you are part of the story!

You're about to enjoy a tasty lunch on a beach when a seagull shows up and starts talking to you. And you can talk back! Answer Gary's questions by nodding or shaking your head, talking (using voice recognition), or by doing nothing at all. Your decisions affect how the story plays out, giving you different experiences of the same narrative when you try it again. Interact with the environment by using motion controllers to draw in the sand, pick up your drink, or toss your flip-flops around on the beach.

Gary the Gull is directed by Mark Walsh of Motional, an 18-year Pixar writer-director and animation supervisor, including the director of the Pixar short film Partysaurus Rex. It was built in partnership with the ex-Pixar ex-Bungie team at Limitless.

✦ AI summary

Gary the Gull is a charming, relaxing indie experience with cute graphics and lighthearted humor that appeals to players seeking casual, low-stress entertainment with puzzle-solving and character interactions. However, the game suffers from significant technical issues including crashes, audio detection problems, and black screen errors that prevent many players from playing at all, and some argue it functions more as a passive VR film than an interactive game with meaningful gameplay mechanics.

"Gary the Gull" — уютная инди-игра с забавной атмосферой. Управляя гагарой, вы помогаете жителям острова, собираете предметы и решаете мелкие головоломки. Графика милая, а сюжет держит в легкой ироничной манере. Игра расслабляющая, без излишней сложности, но с приятными мелочами: диалоги, скрытые квесты и юмористические моменты. Однако сюжет немного поверхностен, а выбор действий ограничен. Подойдет для тех, кто ищет легкий и душевный отдых.

"Gary the Gull" is not a game. Games contain meaningful gamelike interaction and game loops, which are absent in this "art experience". Instead of being a game, "Gary the Gull" is a software application that presents a poorly made Youtube video/short film. So this is a mediocre VR short film, as once more film student hacks try to get Steam to compete with Youtube because nobody will watch their art school dropout stuff. Sure, this is less offensive than most of them, the idea of a talking seagull is cute, but we're not here to review Youtube videos, Steam is for games, and this was published in the games section when it clearly isn't a game. We get this non-game shovelware on Steam whenever film school dropouts are desperate for anyone to give them validation, so they publish their short film on Steam because nobody watches their garbage on Youtube. There was a video section on Steam, but it's deprecated and basically closed, so failed filmmakers seem to just try to abuse the Steam games section instead. Why is this good for gamers? It's not. For those unfamiliar with what actually makes something a game, a "game loop" describes the interaction and feedback a gamer has…

This is short but super cute. Would love to show it to people but the game doesn't pick up audio which leaves it hanging for ages when it asks you a question. Still worth having a look as it will eventually keep playing without an audio response, but would be far better if this was fixed.

The game won't even launch. I've tried to get it to run several times, but an error message stating that the game is "unresponsive" keeps popping up in the mini SteamVR window. I've looked all over the internet for a solution, but nothing useful came up to my dismay. While I browsed for a fix, I couldn't help but notice a lot of complaints about how buggy the game itself is (not related to my problem) and that the people who were experiencing these issues ended up uninstalling the game altogether. For the time being, until the devs fix their game, I'm going to do the same. May 12, 2021 Update: Tried running it again out of curiosity to see if it would work after some time passed. It finally launched, but only got a black screen and nothing else. No solution anywhere. Not on the internet, or in the Steam discussion forums. 2 years after writing this review, and I still can't even play it. This game is pretty much dead in the water. Thank you, Motional and Limitless. August 29, 2023 Update: Just had my PC fully upgraded today, but the black screen persists. It has been 4 years since the publication of this review. I still have yet to actually experience anything. Honestly, Gary the…
