Slender Threads

I fully understand that a meta ending is a huge part of the point and click genre, and yet every time I am disappointed that a game like this choses a meta ending over a natural story based one. I want to be clear, I really did enjoy this. I didn't find this game hard in the slightest, but it made up for that with a really compelling story (for the most part), great visuals, voice acting and humour. There was so much mystery. [spoiler]An ancient civilisation that worships the planets, shadow creatures that are causing you to lose your free will, murders that you are connected to and with each one you know that you are the last one that needs to die. Really interesting stuff.[/spoiler] It just felt like the ending was more of a cop out for what could've been a really brilliant story. You will probably love this, and since steam doesn't allow any sort of mixed review rating I will recommend it. just go into it with your expectations a little lowered.

I got this game because I loved the demo. The mood and art are great, but after playing the full game, I can't 100% recommend it. After picking up where the demo ended, the rest of the puzzles were so simplistic, it felt like we were starting halfway through the game and simply wrapping up loose ends. The ending was underwhelming at best. Still, it was overall a pleasant enough (if not totally fulfilling) experience, and I think worth playing, but only on sale.

An entertaining, satisfactory modern version of Monkey Island 2. Well, the humor is a bit understated for that comparison, but the dialogue is well-written overall (I chuckled out loud a few times for sure). The voice-acting ranges from above-average to very good. The graphics are simple and crisp. There's a fair amount of territory to explore, so I appreciated that the map system made it easy to hop around. Almost no area closes off, so it's occasionally hard to figure out where you might have missed something. The hint system is pretty helpful for overcoming this. There can't really ever be a "perfect" point-and-click game. If the puzzles are too easy, it's a walking simulator. If they're too hard or arbitrary, it feels frustrating. A couple of puzzles seemed to arbitrarily require a pen and paper; otherwise, I enjoyed the trial and error. Personally, I'm not above tabbing out and pulling up a walkthrough. In those moments, the handy map teleport made me happy that I wasn't wasting time side-scrolling back and forth. Not a transcendent game, but a fun offering for the genre, including a nifty little "meta" plot twist at the end that you won't see coming.

Immensely enjoyable and interesting game. You can feel the Lucas Arts influences all over. The dark humor is done well, the puzzles are mostly straight forward, and there's an in game hint system. Tons of QOL that really puts the player first. Well done all around, 8/10.
