Symphonia is praised as a beautifully crafted precision platformer with stunning visuals and excellent orchestral music that complements its musical theme. However, players consistently cite poor default controls that require immediate reconfiguration, awkward design choices like hiding accessibility options and cheats behind difficult challenges, and several unintuitive mechanics such as variable hook length and hidden ability cooldowns that lead to frustrating deaths.
Symphonia is a 2d precision platformer where you fling about as a songbird trying to get the show together. Beat it, got all gems and notes, and got all letters (but not all achievements) in 10.5 hours using a game controller. Difficulty is hard. When I first picked up this game, I remember playing through part of the beginning then putting it down. When I picked it back up, I had no idea what controls did what and the violinist was stuck between a rock and a hard place. I kept dying, repeatedly, trying to sort out the controls without any semblance of success. In the end I had to restart, then stick with it until beating the beginning area. That said, that controls are ambiguous, backwards, and really hard to get use to. More than once I had a hard time grabbing the grab-point, and swinging out the string on later challenge areas only half the time did it in the direction I wanted because the game wants you to stand a certain way and that's bloody hard to do mid-precision. Outside of the controls, the characters are memorable, the music is good (but can lull me to sleep off-game), the levels are all different, and it was fun finding the collectables. The story was …2 found this helpful
The concept is cool, some levels are fascinating, but for the main part of the game -- The platforming does not flow smoohtly at all2 found this helpful
A short but very polished 2D precision platformer that reminds me of the golden age of precision platformers that began following the release of super meat boy. This is quite expensive for its short length but that is because of the orchestra hired in the making of this game. A lot of money went into the development of this game. It does have some really weird design choices though, such as rewarding you with cheats and accessibility settings for completing the toughest challenges. Oh, and the default binds are incredibly bad. make sure to change them in the settings. having the fast travel bind on the left face button normally used for attacks in platformers was truly insane.2 found this helpful
This game isn't bad but it could be much better. The good is the game has a nice look, the platforming is relatively tight, and its a unique idea to have a platformer centered around music with no combat. The negatives are you collect notes and these dots, of which you have no idea what to do with. I was told my "Aura" increased but who TF knows what that means. Many times you aren't sure where to go or don't know at some parts you can interact with something by playing music to get a collectible. Its dumb you have to unlock things like double jump, which should have just been included in the game, by completing optional challenge gauntlets. Make sure you unlock double jump because theres no point in playing this game without it. The story is just you rescuing musicians, theres no dialogue and not much to see there. The platforming controls can be a bit finnicky/slippery at times with things like wall jump, but overall theyre better than many platformers, although as everyone mentioned you need to change default settings because theyre trash. Overall its a unique, if underwhelming platformer with good overall challenge, but make sure you get double jump unlocked. 7.5/101 found this helpful
controls are sucks, camera view is too wide, in general this game looks interesting at the outside, but nothing going on inside.1 found this helpful
Pure platformer, beautiful and original. Difficulty is easy to medium with a minimalist story. Except for wall jumps, mechanics are pretty fluid and pleasing. No dialog here, everything is animation and orchestral music. Very recommended for platformer lovers.
