i like it i think it is cool
Valkie 64 is a retro-inspired action-adventure game developed and published by Malte Glade that proudly embraces the charm of the Nintendo 64 era while incorporating enough modern refinements to remain enjoyable for today's players. Instead of relying solely on nostalgia, the game captures the adventurous spirit of classic 3D platformers and exploration-driven action titles through an engaging fantasy setting, colorful low-polygon visuals, and gameplay centered on discovery. From the opening moments, it is clear that the developer's goal is to recreate the excitement of venturing into a mysterious world filled with secrets, memorable dungeons, and rewarding progression rather than simply copying the appearance of older games. Players assume the role of Valkie, a courageous guardian tasked with saving the kingdom of Celisa from looming danger. The narrative follows a traditional fantasy structure, placing greater emphasis on exploration and adventure than on lengthy cinematic storytelling. Throughout the journey, players encounter friendly villages populated with unique characters who provide useful information, optional quests, and additional world-building that gives Celisa a wel…
It's a nice but small game. For the price tag, it's quite worth it even if the combat can get a bit wonky at times. The story is quite simple and straightforward, in general this game focuses more on its combat mechanic, even if they aren't that deep, just two combos, a parry and a dodge button if you focus on an enemy, but it does have some minor moments were there are puzzle or even platforming elements. Generally speaking in the dungeons. The start makes the game feel a bit small, but it has enough secrets and submissions laying around to get more inmersive over time. It's not as big of a game as it's inspiration, but it's well worth the price. The game is also not too difficult, but the start of the game paints it as much easier than it ends up being overall.
I've played a bit of Valkie 64, got most heart pieces and ITS BAD. This feels like the type of game that someone with Nintendo derangement syndrome would try and use to hype up and shill all because it might be vaguely better than like TotK or something. But this game is far from it and is just embarrassing. Pros: -Gameplay is pretty fun initially -Graphics style is pretty on point Cons: -Literally have no care about the story (why should I care about some random woman who is the protagonist of the game, Link is way cooler) -Enemies are dumb and impossible to really read -Mouse and key board controls suck -Music is incredibly forgettable -No horse (Epona) -Really amateurish UI -Bizarre balancing And just a myriad of other problems. This game reminds of just how much better OoT and TotK is.
"Valkie 64" is a somewhat short third-person action-adventure leaning heavily on the aesthetics of the N64-Zelda-titles and third-person titles of this era in general. You play a guardian of order tasked with reclaiming McGuffins and stopping the classic trope of the reemerging chaos. Visually it hits the nail to nostalgia lane, and if you are here for the atmosphere, it serves nicely. Gameplaywise it is more focused on combat and exploration without roadblock (there is little progression in terms of items that you need for further exploring or puzzle solving) While the combat is somewhat interesting, it can can be a little janky and there is not much variety in terms of enemies or approaches.
The final dungeon is one big combat gauntlet and therefore a little lackluster in my opinion
Worldbuilding on the other hand is colorful and dense and while it is definetly not reinventing the wheel, it is still charming all around and a treat to do all the different sidequests (and kudos for the collab/mentioning with "Siatro", another retro developer that I cherish!). All in all: You get a nice and solid package of new/old, albeit a little watered down. Nonetheless no…
