White Shadows

Think LIMBO combined with a lot of social commentary. Sadly also has a lot of visual glitches, which at least broke my immersion. [hr][/hr] [h2]The Positive:[/h2] Stunning visual art style. Sometimes thought-provoking social commentary. Decent puzzles. [hr][/hr] [h2]The Negative:[/h2] Sometimes strange pacing. STUPENDOUS placement of checkpoints if you consider the achievements. I dont mind an achievement being hard, I just hate that especially for the achievement "Lord of the Birds" you have to play through 2 minutes of nothing to get to the couple of minutes of hard things, making every attempt very annoying, because you not only lose what you managed to beat, but also the 2 minutes of nothingness you have to do benign stuff beforehand. Quite often you get a visual glitch, which is pretty bad imo for a game that relies so heavily on its atmosphere, breaking my immersion. This game is a delightful combo of Limbo and Little Nightmares. It is simple and short. The art is beautiful. Things to keep in mind: This is the Dev's first game - there is less than 3 hours of play time. the video can be glitchy at times. the controls can be clunky occasionally (I played on an XBox controller) I found this game on sale and got it for 2.99 - Worth every penny. I will definitely be looking into more content from this Dev. This is an incredible and promising first work.

White Shadows was a noir styled dystopian story with probably good ideas behind it but fell off with a bad execution. The trigger warning at the start made me think that they had a good base for their dystopian world, and they actually wanted to touch upon the reality of racism, xenophobia, the power hierarchy and separatism. However, the end product seems like they hesitated to create a world too grim and kept the cruel things somehow too soft. I definitely don't mean this in an edgy way, but a more gruesome world would be much better in this setting because the impact the separatism has on birds wasn't visualized enough except through some repeated signs and messages. An inspiration to look up to is Oddworld, where racism along with capitalism are handled perfectly in a gruesome but colorful world. The messages were too vague and the rushed story wasn't helpful for the case it was trying to highlight. Everything happens too fast and there's almost nothing to digest so you just keep rushing through everything. Bioshock x Oddworld x Little nightmares = This

Such a weird, Orwellian indie. Even though I didn’t fully understand the ending, it was a super enjoyable few hours. More artistic and brainy than anything else. It was great!
