Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA

If you liked Memories of Celceta then it's safe to say you're probably going to like Lacrimosa of Dana. For one thing, the narrative is significantly more developed, better conveying its raised stakes and regional lore than Celceta did. Moreover, the general gameplay experience, although mostly iterating on the same systems that Celceta had, is more expansive due to the much improved world geometry, introduction of raids and hunts, jumping, and improved QoL features (e.g. increased Adventure Item slots). Celceta's level design sometimes became quite monotonous because just about every environment was a series of winding corridors, but Lacrimosa of Dana consciously avoids this by using large rooms and verticality to keep things interesting. The only aspect of intentional game design where Ys 8 trends backwards is the crafting system, which was, for whatever reason, simplified considerably from Celceta. In Celceta, you could synthesise weapons and armour with different materials to confer specific bonuses, like an increased chance of inflicting elemental debuffs or lifesteal. Back before I played this game, I would hear a lot of people sing this game's praises. Either this one or Monstrum Nox, but generally, there was a positive view of this one. In some ways, I can see why after finally playing it for myself. While I do think certain parts of the game, namely the tail end of Chapter 2 and parts of Chapter 5, drag on for a bit too long and I wasn't a big fan of how the fishing minigame was a button masher, it didn't completely ruin the experience for me. This is another map making game like Memories of Celceta, so it does have the formula of "come back to this area with new stuff" thing that games primarily involving exploring large areas has going on. I do wish the double jump item was given a little bit earlier to make traversal a bit easier, but it's whatever. Similar to Celceta, getting materials for stuff was a thing that did require running back to other places to farm materials a couple of times. I really tried to like this game, but i kept getting bored. It not that bad but i couldnt get into it

Why does this game's soundtrack SLAP SO HARD?? I've not played a game in the Ys series before but was informed this would be a good place to start as it's apparently the start of a new story with new characters. Kinda typical JRPG affair so far, but the real-time combat is very nice and fluid. Going from area to area does not feel like too much of a chore when you can just sprint through, sword swinging. As soon as I got started in the overworld I was blown away by an OST which goes way harder than it has any right to. My husband turned to me and said "why is it playing final boss music" IN THE OVERWORLD. Kinda gives me Sonic Adventure vibes with the guitars. Then I faced a large enemy and it went full on power metal. I love this game already. Getting controller working properly was a pain and lack of ultrawide support is a shame.
