god this series is beautifullly written. the gameplay might feel a bit like a chore but everything else is just absolute perfection.

I hit YES on 'Would you recommend this game?', but this is one of those moments where one-or-two thumbs for up and down would really help. This was a 6/10, barely recommendable, and I still don't understand why it's such a highly rated game / IP. Nier Replicant (or the modern remake) felt like Zelda designed by ADD 13-year-olds with an indie budget and raging hormones. The game itself is fun, with some genuinely adult themes and surprisingly good writing, but it's also rich with SUPER-childlike moments. It can't figure out if it wants to be a GA or TEEN audience one. There's a woman in lingerie the whole time, with no explanation why (on the first playthrough, which is enough to say it was an excuse to sell some games to 13 year olds with out of control hormones). Characters swear — pretty well, actually, with some great writing — but it's totally off balance with a dude who needs to find ten red apples because his wife likes... fresh fruit? It's very much like playing an anime that seems kid-friendly until, all of a sudden, there's a WTF moment. But tonality aside, which, like... if you've watched anime it can at least "match styles," there's a LOT of technical garbage…
