Aviary Attorney

Reviewing (mostly) every game (or DLC) in my library, part 661: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️☆ (9/10) Huh. You know, for such a small game, [i]Aviary Attorney[/i] packs a ridiculous amount of punch. I went into this expecting a cute little bird lawyer game and came away impressed by how much story, personality, and heart the developers managed to cram into roughly four hours. The cute little bird lawyer part is true, but you also get to wander around nineteenth-century France, interact with a large, colorful cast, and unravel a conspiracy that's bigger than yourself and your sidekick. The best part, of course, is how thought-provoking and intelligent the game is regarding justice, morality, and love. [b][h2]Pros:[/h2][/b] ✅ [b]Fantastic writing.[/b] The highlight for me! The writing is witty, charming, and funny without sacrificing the more serious moments or being try-hard. There are puns everywhere—and not just bird puns! Yet, beneath the humor is a surprisingly compelling mystery, with twists that I didn't see coming and a larger plot that gradually reveals itself as you play. Even though I will probably be hunted for sport for admitting this: I like it way better than Ace Attorney. It has so many bird puns.

Friends, French anthropomorphic caricatures, countrymen, lend me your ears. When I bought this game, I expected a cute Ace Attorney knock-off. When I started playing the game, the simple case structure and heaps of bird puns convinced me I'd made a correct assessment. This game is short, it's full of puns, and it's simple... but it is far from a cheap imitation. It is an exceptional little story, with real heart. Act 3 showed me that it was capable of breaking the simple case-investigation-case-investigation flow of its predecessors, and showed me that it is also capable of telling a deeply engaging story in such a short time. I found it's investigation mechanics to be rather satisfying. In breaking from Ace Attorney, you CAN go into a case without all your necessary evidence, and your choices feel all that more impactful for it. I found myself engrossed in the story that upon reaching one case without all my evidence, I felt the need to walk back the clock.
