SpellForce: The Order of Dawn
In a world beyond imagination...
In their immeasurable greed and constant thirst for power, the thirteen most powerful Mages of all time doomed the land, hurling it into an endless spiral of chaos and despair. Entire countries were wiped out in the blink of an eye when the devastating power of the Elements was unleashed - Elements summoned by dark rituals. Continents shattered like glass, the pieces strewn about like leaves in the wind. Huge armies, bound by the the power of ancient runes, brought war and destruction to the lands that survived the initial onslaught. All that was left were a few islands, connected by magic portals.
Now, only a few years after the end of the Convocation, evil is back - stronger and more powerful than ever before - to finish what was started. Yet there is still hope. The prophecies tell of a human. A human damned to immortality, bound forever by the power of the blood runes…
Soon, the time will come when the power of one may change the destiny of many. For better or for worse...
SpellForce: Shadow of the Phoenix
By means of an enslaved god's life essence a dark necromancer is trying to reanimate the powerful circle mages and make them his unholy servants. Only the power of the Phoenix Stone will be able to prevent the returning of the Circle.
Thus the rune is summoned again to finally put an end to his former slave-masters.
But to free the special power of the Phoenix Stone, the blade of the Shadow Sword is required which is held by the rune warrior of Urgath. The two avatars need to combine their powers and work together to overcome this final enemy.
SpellForce: Breath of Winter
A Prince of Darkness, a Fial Darg, was set free through the Convocation and took over the reign over the Fire Empire. His whish is to bring the Renegades, the Gods of darkness, back to Eo.
For the Ritual, to make that happen, he needs the blood of a first-born Elve. But there is only one more left, Cenwen, the Elve Queen, who lives under the ice where she sings for the mighty dragon Aryn…

What Steam players say
Recent verbatim reviews from Steam — separate from playze.io community reviews below.
SpellForce - Platinum Edition is a genuinely unique blend of RPG and RTS mechanics that few games have matched, offering deep character building alongside optional army management, but it suffers from dated graphics, sluggish pacing, lengthy campaigns, and clunky quest design that can feel like a slog to push through. Players consistently praise its innovative fusion of genres and the freedom to focus on either the RPG or RTS elements, though they caution that patience and potentially gameplay speed mods are necessary to enjoy it.
probably the failures are a product of it's time, but certain things are not forgivable. rpg elements REQUIRE time to STOP when in the character menus. if you do not have the game pause when in these menus, it becomes impossible to play that element of the game. the game doesn't even pause the rts elements when you are talking with an npc. so while you are getting details about a quest, you are getting blaring horns telling you that you're under attack.1 found this helpful

Spellforce 1 has aged like spoiled milk in many ways! If having to see the same scripted animations in the game over and over again for 50 hours to beat a game no thanks it's just not worth my sanity! Spellforce just feels limited because there's no standard skirmish mode! Was a cool looking game with good soundtracks but the gameplay itself in Spellforce 1 sucks now so we may as well leave Spellforce 1 in the past!
Nostalgiaaa!
There isn't a game quite like it, mixing the RTS with RPG. Maybe Sacrifice of the old ones, but not quite. It's slow, deliberate in its mechanics and general gameplay pacing - some missions would take you several hours to beat. And although you can sometimes bypass building an army and get it done quicker with just your heroes - that would be really missing the point of this game. You build a huge base, an equally sizeable army - and you also get to enjoy seeing both from a 3rd person view. The game is also quite massive even without the 2 expansions, so you will likely sink 200+ hours into the whole thing. The music is among the best in the genre and deserves an award on its own - definitely in my top 5 for fantasy games (another one being Spellforce 2 heh). It's just such a treat to listen to. Hat's off for the composer and the orchestra - that's quite a talent. It's certainly not without its flaws. Writing is often questionable with many odd errors (probably lost in translation ?), voice acting - downright terrible at times. In fact, I even bought a German version of it back in the day, to see if it was better - it was, and substantially. Even though I'm not a native s…
They don't make 'em like this anymore... A unique blend of RPG and RTS from the 2000s, when companies competed by creativity rather than by shareholder value. For todays dopamine over-saturated brains it may take some patience to get into the game's pace, but once you do it's a wonderful journey with such a classic sound design. There is nothing else out there like Spellforce 1.
