About Per Aspera

✦ AI summary

You play as an artificial intelligence tasked with terraforming Mars by building interconnected planetary infrastructure, managing complex resources, and making morally consequential decisions that shape humanity's future on the Red Planet. Grounded in real scientific research from NASA, Per Aspera combines hard sci-fi base building with a mystery-driven narrative featuring acclaimed voice actors, where you'll uncover remnants of failed colonization attempts while defending against an unknown threat.

The surface of Mars is littered with Humanity’s failed attempts to colonize its surface. This time will be different - this time there is no room for human error.

Per Aspera is a planetary simulation game that combines hard science fiction and base building and takes the experience planet-wide. Step into the role of AMI, an Artificial Consciousness with the prime directive of terraforming Mars for human colonization.

FEATURES:

  • Balance a complex well of resources to build interconnected structures that span the entire planet.
  • Customize your planet with branching research trees that allow players to tailor their terraforming plan — Develop new technologies, steeped in real-world science, to create a thriving interplanetary civilization.
  • Uncover the mystery of a threatening presence on Mars and defend your colonies from unknown and combative forces.
  • Immerse yourself in a rich, compelling narrative or take your time and craft the perfect Martian landscape with Sandbox Mode.
  • Includes the immersive voice acting talents of Troy Baker, Phil LaMarr, Laila Berzins, Yong Yea, Lynsey Murrell, and Nneka Okoye.
  • Terraform Together with Friends (up to 4 players). Sandbox Mode Only.

Using scientific theories proposed by real space agencies and geographical data directly from NASA, Per Aspera presents life-like conditions and challenges steeped in theoretical science.

Per Aspera contains a rich narrative that presents players with difficult decisions with planet-wide consequences. See the world through the eyes of an infant AI as it traverses a complicated ocean of self-discovery and shapes the fate of the human race. Navigate your ever-evolving programming to adapt to morally challenging concepts and forge relationships with the human colonists that look to you for their continued survival. The choices you make will impact how your mission ultimately concludes.

Keep your wits about you as this is not the first time humans have tried to tame the Red Planet. Expose long-forgotten relics of Humanity’s failed attempts, learn from their past mistakes, and uncover a looming menace that threatens to see you fail at any cost.

✦ AI summary

Per Aspera is a relaxing, story-driven city-builder about colonizing Mars that appeals to logistics enthusiasts with its realistic terraforming mechanics and satisfying progression through technology research. Players consistently praise the engaging gameplay and scientific depth, though many note that the game feels slow and grindy due to inefficient worker pathfinding and resource distribution, which can make sessions feel tedious despite having plenty of workers and resources.

honestly super interesting. Like the gameplay, but its wayyyyy to slow. Ill have hundreds of extra resources and however the workers are programmed, it takes years to just build 5 buildings, and yes I have PLENTY of workers. almost a 1 worker for every 2 buildings. the focus ability also is just not weighted high enough. its just ungodly inefficient right now. but thats the only complaint. so if they fix that would be a great game. just a slog right now.

Good game, sometimes a bit tiresome. What I like, is the story (could be a bit more complex), thechnological progess. I havent tried higher levels yet, should be fun. This 90hrs is just to finish one game. Overall: Very good, worth buying.

Neat little game for logistics enthusiasts. Coming from factorio, the "hard mode" was fairly easy. It's just a relaxing game where you set up your base and watch the little robots do all the work. One thing however that I thankfully realized very early in my playthrough : THE DRONE WORKERS DO NOT TRAVEL ! You have to set up one worker hub per worker, and it will establish the working perimeter for that one drone. It works well but you need to know about it or else you'll wonder why 9 of your drones are on their ass watching one drone do all the work (which is a fair representation of an earthen construction site but the game happens on Mars). The whole terraforming part feels quite realistic and scientific which enhances the satisfaction of actually completing steps (which take years at a time !). Oh and there is a story too. I totally ignored it because it was humans rambling around which had absolutely no benefits for me or my drones. There is some RP choices to make and a plot twist.

Low-pressure progress; events seem to be keyed to achievements so things don't happen unless you are able to deal with them. At the risk of it becoming a nag, the computer might give actual progress hints instead of simply encouraging the research you are already doing. It's a nice, chill, city builder, which scratches my "watch things you make crawl around the screen and make more things" itch. The "power grid" is a nuisance, but the colony doesn't seem to have discovered power transmission cable; so be it. And i guess it's nice to know in advance that half my colony is doomed because i built it in a flood plain, but again, so be it. Maybe we'll invent undersea domes; i haven't checked the tech trees in detail.
